The two most successful high school football programs in the history of the state playoffs have agreed to meet in the 2020 season opener. Southern Columbia and Berwick have combined to win 15 state championships. The Tigers and Bulldogs will play at Crispin Field in Berwick to open the 2020 season and then at Tiger Stadium in the 2021 opener. The only time Southern Columbia has played Berwick in football was in 1965 when the Bulldogs won 34-13 at Crispin Field.
One of the greatest players in Berwick High School football history is now the school’s athletic director. Bo Orlando was named to that position at last night’s school board meeting. As a quarterback and defensive back for Berwick, Orlando led the Bulldogs to an unbeaten season and a number one ranking in the USA Today poll during his senior season in 1983. He went on to play at West Virginia and then nine seasons in the National Football League. Orlando replaces Frank Sheptock who was both Head football coach and athletic director before stepping down from both positions recently. Berwick is expected to name a new head coach in a few weeks.
The Southern Columbia football team will receive national attention when the Tigers open the 2019 season. That opener will be played against Hammon High School in Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday afternoon, August 25. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN as part of their high school showcase series. Hammon is a private school that has won 16 state championships in South Carolina.
