Phillies chairman David Montgomery passes away at 72

Word spread across the world of Major League Baseball after the Philadelphia Philles announced on Wednesday that their longtime chairman David Montgomery passed away Tuesday night following a long fight against cancer. Montgomery, age 72, had been working with the Phillies since 1971, becoming a beloved figure in the baseball world at large, and among many accomplishments oversaw the building of the current home of the Phillies, Citizen’s Bank Park.

Berwick and Southern To Face Off In 2020

The two most successful high school football programs in the history of the state playoffs have agreed to meet in the 2020 season opener. Southern Columbia and Berwick have combined to win 15 state championships. The Tigers and Bulldogs will play at Crispin Field in Berwick to open the 2020 season and then at Tiger Stadium in the 2021 opener. The only time Southern Columbia has played Berwick in football was in 1965 when the Bulldogs won 34-13 at Crispin Field.

New Athletic Director Named At Berwick

One of the greatest players in Berwick High School football history is now the school’s athletic director. Bo Orlando was named to that position at last night’s school board meeting. As a quarterback and defensive back for Berwick, Orlando led the Bulldogs to an unbeaten season and a number one ranking in the USA Today poll during his senior season in 1983. He went on to play at West Virginia and then nine seasons in the National Football League. Orlando replaces Frank Sheptock who was both Head football coach and athletic director before stepping down from both positions recently. Berwick is expected to name a new head coach in a few weeks.

Southern Columbia Football To Be Covered Nationally

The Southern Columbia football team will receive national attention when the Tigers open the 2019 season. That opener will be played against Hammon High School in Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday afternoon, August 25. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN as part of their high school showcase series. Hammon  is a private school that has won 16 state championships in South Carolina.

High School Basketball Wrap-Up

The Danville girls were the last local high school basketball team still playing in the state playoffs. Their run ended Saturday afternoon in Hazleton with a 60-37 loss to Bethlehem Catholic in the Quad A state quarterfinals. Danville finished the season with a record of 24-5.

Danville senior Coleman Cush is the first recipient of the Heartland Conference scholar athlete award. The starting point guard helped the Ironmen win the Heartland Conference Division One title as well as the District 4 Quad A championship.

High School Basketball Wednesday

The long and successful season of the Danville boys' basketball team came to an end Tuesday night. The Ironmen lost to two time defending state champion Imhotep Charter 68-37 in the second round of the Class Quad A State playoffs. Danville finishes the season with a record of 23 and 5.

Three area teams will play second round state playoff games tonight. The Millville boys, with a season record of 25 and 1, will play North Star at Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate starting at 6.

The Danville girls play Elco this afternoon at 5 at Martz Hall in Pottsville in  Quad A ; and the Benton girls play Weatherly tonight at 7:30 at Bloomsburg University in a Class A game.

Danville Basketball

The Danville boys basketball team has had a great season. The Ironmen have a record of 24 and 3. They are the Heartland Conference Division One and District 4 Quad A champions. Last Friday they beat Western Wayne in the first round of the state playoffs, but tonight they face their biggest challenge of the season. Danville will go against Philadelphia powerhouse Imhotep Charter, a team that has won back to back state championships. Tonight's game will be played at Central Dauphin East High School starting at 7:30.

In boys basketball Thursday night, Millville won the District 4 Class AA championship beating Northeast Bradford 56-36.

In the third place game, Bloomsburg advanced to the state tournament with a 60-50 win over South Williamsport.

The Danville boys and girls basketball teams will play in District 4 Quad A championship games Saturday afternoon at Shikellamy High School. The girls play Mifflinburg at 2 o'clock followed by the boys against Shamokin.

Nineteen area wrestlers will compete in the Class AA Northeast Regional which starts today at Williamsport High School.

Bloomsburg High School Basketball

The Bloomsburg High School basketball team has a chance to make school history on Saturday night when the Panthers take on Holy Cross in a Class AA first round state playoff game. No Bloomsburg boys basketball team has advanced to the state playoffs since 1998, and the Panthers have never won a state playoff game in 6 appearances. Bloomsburg, the third place team out of District 4, has a record of 14 and 11. Holy Cross, the District 2 Champion, is 20 and 5. Saturday night's game will be played at Marywood University in Scranton starting at 7:30.

Jim Doyle On Frank Sheptock's Departure From Berwick

Frank Sheptock has resigned his position as head football coach and athletic director at Berwick High School. He announced his intentions to the Berwick administrators yesterday and met with his players and assistant coaches. Sheptock will be an assistant at King's College in Wilkes Barre next fall. A three time All American linebacker at Bloomsburg University and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Sheptock succeeded the late George Curry at Berwick. In his three seasons with the Bulldogs, his teams were 27 and 11 and reached the District 2 Quad A finals twice and the semifinals last season. Prior to taking over in Berwick, he was the head coach at Wilkes for 18 seasons.

High School Wrestling Championships

Fourteen area high school wrestlers have advanced to the state championships as a result of their performances in the Class AA Northeast Regional which concluded Saturday in Williamsport. Among the 14 are 9 from Southern Columbia. The Tigers had three regional champions: Gaven Garcia, Gage Garcia, and Lear Clinton. Another local gold medal winner was Benton's Gabe Strickland. The state championships begin Thursday morning at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Four area high school basketball teams advanced to the District 4 semifinals with wins Thursday night. The Millville boys improved their record to 22 and 1 with a 66-38 win over East Juniata. The Millville girls routed Meadowbrook Christian 58-26.

The Bloomsburg boys got by Wyalusing 50-42; Central Columbia beat North Penn/Mansfield 69-53, and the Southern Columbia boys were eliminated by Mount Carmel 52-43.

High school wrestling’s post season continues tonight with the District 4 Class AA tournament at Williamsport High School.

In girls high school basketball Wednesday night, in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference championships at Shikellamy High School, Danville beat Warrior Run 49-43 and Mifflinburg beat Loyalsock 57-54 in overtime. The championship game between Danville and Mifflinburg will be played Friday night at 6.

Tonight in the boys semifinals, Danville plays Montoursville at 6 followed by Loyalsock against Mount Carmel.

The regular season game between Southern Columbia and Bloomsburg was postponed Wednesday night. That game will be played tonight starting at 7 at the Bloomsburg Middle School Gym.

In boys high school basketball Thursday night In the Heartland Conference semifinals at Shikellamy, Montoursville upset Danville 61-57, and Loyalsock beat Mount Carmel 85-63. Tonight in the girls championship game at 6, Danville plays Mifflinburg. That will be followed by the boys final between Montoursville and Loyalsock.

In boys regular season games Thursday night, Millville beat Saint John Neumann 66-49 to move into a first place tie with Neumann in the Mid Penn Conference, and Bloomsburg Beat Southern Columbia 62-54. In girls basketball Thursday night, Bloomsburg beat Central Mountain 59-44.
