PA Auditor General Urges Lawmakers To Make Legislative Change To Help Volunteer Firefighters

Pennsylvania’s chief fiscal watchdog is calling for a change in state law to help volunteer fire fighters. Auditor General Eugene DePasquale is calling on lawmakers to update the state law which created volunteer firefighters’ relief associations to provide greater flexibility when it comes to how state aid they receive can be used. DePasquale says restrictions in the law can make it difficult for them to spend state aid in ways that meet the needs of firefighters and the communities they serve. DePasquale says audits conducted in the last few years by his department identified 59 volunteer firefighters’ relief associations with fund balances of a million dollars or more.
