Columbia County is getting $500,000 in state grant money to help smaller, cash-strapped communities with flood mitigation and flood recovery projects. The announcement came from state Senator John Gordner and state Representative David Millard Thursday at the Columbia County Commissioner’s meeting. The county commissioners will decide where and how the money will be spent, but possible uses of the money including debris removal and bank stabilization along streams like Fishing Creek. Senator Gordner was also able to help secure $220-thousand dollars for Fairmount Township, Luzerne County to buy a large excavator for stream cleaning and repair. The excavator will be shared with municipalities in Northern Columbia County.
