PA Gas Tax Money Being Diverted Away From Road & Bridge Projects

Pennsylvania drivers pay the highest gasoline taxin the United States and the Pennsylvania’s fiscal watchdog says a big chunk of that money isn’t going where it should. Auditor General Eugene DePasquale says an audit by his department found that over the past 6 years $4.2 billion was diverted from the Motor License Fund to the State Police to help it deal with increasing responsibilities as it provides coverage for the growing number of communities which no longer have their own police departments. DePasquale says that money could have been used to cut the number of structurally deficient state-owned bridges in half. There are more than 2,800 structurally-deficient bridges in the state.
