Governor Tom Wolf has signed legislation into law designating the Eastern Hellbender as Pennsylvania’s official state amphibian. The Eastern Hellbender is the largest salamander in North America. Its presence is a sign of good water quality. Not the most attractive creature, the Hellbender has a number of nicknames, including the lasagna lizard, the mud puppy and the snot otter. This is the first official designation in the state since Governor Milton Shapp signed legislation into law in 1974 making the firefly the official state insect.
