State House Appropriations Committee Chair Worries About Ripple Effect Of Raising New Teacher Salaries

Governor Tom Wolf's proposal to raise the starting salary for new teachers was questioned during the Department of Education's budget hearing before the House Appropriations Committee. House Appropriations Committee Chair Stan Saylor says he can see veteran teachers' concerns about raising starting salaries for new teachers to $45,000 leading to legal action. Saylor says veteran teachers who've earned masters degrees or taken continuing education classes will think they're worth more money as well. If their salaries also increased Saylor says he can see the need for property tax hikes.
