Trial Of Former Prison Guard Accused Of Rape Postponed

A former SCI-Coal Township prison guard accused of multiple rapes in our area is scheduled for trial in May. Northumberland County President Judge Charles Saylor on Friday granted the request from the defense to postpone the trial from April until May. 45-year-old Charles Kurtz is charged in connection with a series of rapes, kidnappings or attempted kidnappings, in Northumberland, Montour and Columbia counties between November 2012 and April 2017. Kurtz was originally charged in December 2017 with the kidnapping and rape of two women and the attempted kidnapping of a third. New charges filed last year involving two additional victims. According to police, Kurtz would break into the victim’s home, kidnap them, take them to another location and rape them. Kurtz remains locked up in Northumberland County prison in lieu of $1.75 million bail.
