Southern Columbia Vs. Wyoming Area Football Game Is Back On

First it was on, then it was off. Now, one of the most anticipated high school football games this area has seen in recent memory is back on. Undefeated Wyoming Area from District 2 will host undefeated Southern Columbia from District 4 Friday night in West Pittston. Wyoming area’s originally scheduled opponent Holy Redeemer will take on Southern’s original opponent Shikellamy at Crispin Field in Berwick on Friday. The original request for the schedule change was quickly approved several weeks ago by the Wyoming Valley Conference as well as Districts 2 and 4, but last week the executive committee of the Heartland Conference refused to grant permission and even threatened sanctions against Southern’s sports programs if they went ahead with the Wyoming area game. After last week’s denial, Shikellamy submited another request for the schedule change. The Heartland Conference met yesterday to consider Shikellamy’s request and this time granted permission for the change. Officials with the Wyoming Area School District say they expect 5,000 to 7,000 fans to show-up at the game between the two 7-and-0 teams.
