Police In Montour County Warn About Telephone Scam

Police in Mahoning Township, Montour County are warning residents about a possible phone scam. Officers say a township resident got a call Tuesday from an individual claiming to represent the Federal Trade Commission telling the resident their Social Security number was used in drug trafficking in Central and South America. The fake FTC representative also said that local police had an active warrant for the resident's arrest. Another caller, claiming to be part of the Mahoning Township Police Department, contacted the resident about the warrant. That caller, identifying herself as Amy Ham, asked the resident to purchase Google Play cards to avoid being arrested. The resident hung up and contacted police. If you get a similar call, Police say hanging up and reporting to local police is the best thing to do. Police also caution against divulging personal information to unknown callers.
