Pennsylvania has an official state bird—it’s the Ruffed Grouse. There’s an official state mammal—it’s the White-tailed deer. There is even a state beverage—It’s milk. And soon Pennsylvania may have an official state amphibian. A bill proposed by Senator Gene Yaw would designate the Eastern Hellbender, the third largest salamander in the world, as Pennsylvania's official amphibian. Yaw says students in his district who studied the Hellbender through the Clean Water Institute at Lycoming College asked him to introduce the bill. Yaw sees the Hellbender, a natural indicator of clean water, as the perfect symbol to promote clean water in PA.
