West Nile Virus Returns

With the state's first human case of West Nile Virus this year having been identified, Pennsylvania residents are being urged to take steps to protect themselves from the mosquito-borne illness. The Departments of Health and Environmental Protection say this year's first human case of West Nile Virus in PA has been detected in an Allegheny County resident. Matt Helwig of the DEP's Vector Management Program says its getting to be the time of year when the chances for contracting West Nile increase. To guard against infection PA residents are urged to eliminate standing water around their homes and to use insect repellent when outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes carrying West Nile are most active.
