Pennsylvania will be the first state to benefit from a $50 million donation from former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's charity to help fight the opioid epidemic. Pennsylvania will receive about $10 million from Bloomberg's foundation. Bloomberg notes that PA has been one of the states hardest hit by the opioid crisis as almost 5,400 people died from drug overdoses last year in the Commonwealth--the highest number of drug overdose deaths among all states and twice as many as in 2014. Gov. Tom Wolf said he was “deeply grateful” for the financial and technical resources Pennsylvania will receive through the partnership with Bloomberg’s charity. Bloomberg’s charity will help up to 10 states address the opioid addiction crisis.
