Heating season is upon us, and state officials say help is available for anyone who may be struggling to pay utility bills. Utility officials say the time to apply for assistance is before the temperature drops and the bills start piling up. Applications are being accepted for LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program which is administered through the Department of Human Services. DHS also has a program to help with repairs to household heating systems. In addition, most utilities offer help with paying winter bills.
