State lawmakers and family law experts raising awareness of a new law regarding child custody and grandparents. The new law improves legal standing for a third party, such as a grandparent, in determining custody in cases where biological parents are deceased or no longer able to care for a child. State Senator Don White says it doesn't guarantee grandparents will win custody, but does recognize they should be considered. White says the opioid crisis has made this necessary. The next step will be a media campaign informing the public this law is now in effect.
