A bill which would expand the ways in which volunteer fire fighter relief funds could be used was advanced by the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee. The bill’s prime sponsor says it would allow fire fighter relief funds to be used for the recruitment and retention of fire fighters by volunteer fire companies. The legislation would also provide the office of the State Fire Marshal with greater involvement in relief funds. Auditor General Eugene DePasquale recently called on lawmakers to update the state law which created volunteer fire fighters’ relief associations.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is reminding anglers that Fall trout stocking is right around the corner. The summer fishing season may be coming to a close but starting October 1st more than 113-thousand adult brook, brown, and rainbow trout will be placed into waterways across Pennsylvania. Anglers can fish for those trout immediately, while those age 16 and under will need a valid state fishing license and proper permit to harvest trout. The extended season, which launched on September 1st, will continue through February 28th of next year, with a daily creel limit of three trout at least seven inches in size.
The ex-boyfriend of a woman who went missing nearly 16 years ago in Lycoming County has confessed to murder. 49-year-old Jade Babcock was arrested Tuesday for the abuse of a corpse in connection with human remains found in a storage facility in Philadelphia. Initially, Babcock has been charged with abuse of a corpse, but according to authorities, Babcock has confessed to the killing of 37-year-old Brenda Jacobs who went missing in December of 2003 from Montoursville. However, she wasn’t reported missing until 2013. Authorities are now investigating whether severed legs found in the Susquehanna River near Williamsport earlier this year are from Jacobs. Homicide charges against Babcock are expected from the Lycoming County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.
