Season Preview: Danville

2013 Season Preview

OFFENSE

On offense the Danville Ironmen appear to be in good shape with Weston Baylor back at QB. Last year Baylor threw for over 1300 yards and 18 touchdowns. Sammy Dressler also returns in the backfield. Dressler is closing in on the school rushing record. Isaiah Croll is also back. Those two made for a productive tandem last season. With the exception of one graduating senior the offensive line returns for the Ironmen, in fact Danville had only five seniors on the team last year with three of them starting. Coach Jim Keiser says that the competition has been fierce for that job The offense, as well as the entire squad is experienced and after winning the Heartland Conference Division I title last year they will probably have a target on their back.

DEFENSE

On defense the Ironmen have Eric Haney their all state linebacker again. Haney will play the middle. Having an all state linebacker to anchor the middle is problem enough for opponents  but two other linebackers will also return. They are Issac Troutman and Tom Brouse. Isaiah Kroll will probably see time at linebacker as well. Kroll may be only one of a couple of players that play on both sides of the ball. It's the same story for the Danville defense as the offense, experience. One area where the Ironmen will not be the same this year is in the secondary. Danville lost two starters and are looking for players to step in to those spots. The Ironmen also lost a starting defensive tackle. Besides winning the Heartland Conference Division I title last year they also won the school's first District 4 championship (Class AA) since 1999 and advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

SPECIAL TEAMS

It's the same story line. Junior Shane Riley is back as the kicking specialist for Danville. His numbers say it all. Riley was good in nine of ten field goal attempts last year and perfect on extra points. He boots it deep on kick offs usually getting it inside the five yard line. But they're looking for more. Coach Keiser says this year they hope to get him in to the end zone. The punting duties are unsettled with Riley competing for that spot along with sophomore Sam Crone.

OVERALL

Experience is the word that describes the Ironmen with all but five players returning. The pieces look to be in place for another successful season after last year's regular season record of 8-2. The Ironmen ended the year with a playoff loss to Wyomissing, the eventual state champion. Coach Keiser said the one thing that he's looking for is leadership from his seniors. The coach says that some players are beginning to show signs in that direction.
