Winter Weather Advisory

The Susquehanna Valley and Central Pennsylvania are under the gun again. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning Monday evening... ending late Tuesday morning. The latest weather system is due to low pressure at the surface and a potent upper air disturbance which could produce up to five inches of new snow before noon time Tuesday. Forecasters say the snow will begin falling after 2 AM with patchy, freezing drizzle towards morning.

That will make the drive to work tricky... and puts a question mark on the start of school. If classes are delayed... or school's shut down for the day... we'll tell you about them during Operation Stormwatch Tuesday on the WHLM Morning Buzz as well as on the web at www.WHLM.com and Twitter.

 

Route 54 Open

Route 54 in the Washingtonville area of Montour County is back open to traffic. That word from PennDOT. The busy two - lane highway was closed for the Monday morning rush hour due to a car crash... which draped lived power lines across the road. The lines have been replaced and the accident investigation completed.

 

Haskell Services

Funeral services for the two Berwick children killed in a grinding two vehicle crash near Forks on Friday will be held Wednesday at the Emmanuel Bible Chapel on Kachinka Hollow Road. 8 – year old Abigail Haskell... and her 3 – year old sister... Charlotte... died when the mini – van they were riding in and driven by their mother... went out of control and was broadsided by a work truck. Both children died at the scene. Meantime... the children's mother... Amanda... has been released from Geisinger... while a third child... Allison... remains in the hospital, but alert.

 

Martin / BU Construction 01

Bloomsburg University will undertake a lot of building projects and upgrades on campus as we roll into the spring and summer of 2014. BU's Bonnie Martin says many of the 15 projects deal with routine maintenance, but the biggest project is the improvement of the intersection of Lightstreet Road and Country Club Drive. Late last year... the University purchasing a parcel of land to provide new turning lanes and added traffic improvements to the area.

 

Flu Shots / Evangelical

We are at the peak of flu season here in the Susquehanna Valley... and there are flu injections available at area hospital's. At Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg... the folks who run the Health and Wellness Center have been giving the vaccines on a daily basis. Evangelical's Sheila Packer says there is no shortage of the drug. You can visit Evangelical's Health and Wellness Center... next to the hospital north of Lewisburg by giving them a call to make an appointment. There is a cost for the injection... which is... in many cases... covered by insurance.

 

Jayson Terdiman

American double Luge competitor Jayson Terdiman of Berwick has some time on his hands now that his Olympic competition is over. He and his partner finished 11th last week... and now all Terdiman wants to do is catch a bit of Russian snow,,, and so some snowboarding near Sochi. Terdiman will return home to Berwick following the games. He'll be honored with a parade through the borough on March 1st.

 

Hazleton Robbery

Hazleton police are searching for a man who held up a convenience store at the start of the weekend. Police say the man strolled into the Pantry Quick on West Diamond Avenue on Friday night... forcing the clerk to give him money... before fleeing the scene. No one was hurt in Friday night's stick up in Hazleton.

 

Wilkes - Barre Fire

Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked an blaze in a Wilkes – Barre apartment Monday morning. The fire happened shortly after midnight on Carlisle Street. About a dozen people were forced out into the street... but were later allowed to return.

 

Keystone Job Corps

The Keystone Job Corps Center in Drums now has a full compliment of students... but an estimated 129 less than they had a year ago. That's due to a $100 – million budget shortfall... nationwide... dating back two years. And it comes a year after a freeze on admission of new students was imposed.

 

Thrill Kill

Federal and local law enforcement around the country are looking into a claim by a young woman that she has killed more than 20 people ....... from Alaska to North Carolina. Miranda Barbour and and her newlywed husband... Elytte... are now charged in Northumberland County with killing a Port Treverton man they met thru Craigslist.

 

PSU President

Penn State University could have a new President by the end of the day. The University's board of trustees will meet Monday and are expected to name 62 – year old Eric Barron to lead the school. Barron is a former PSU dean... and is currently Florida State University president. His selection culminates a yearlong search.

BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to two nationally ranked teams at the National duals yesterday at Saint John Arena at Ohio State University. The Huskies lost to 11th ranked Oklahoma 21-15 and to 18th ranked Illinois 23-8. They will close out the regular season with a match at Binghamton University Saturday afternoon.

 

BU Football

Two Bloomsburg University football players have been invited to the NFL Combine. Defensive end Larry Webster and offensive tackle Matt Feiler are two of a total of 14 Division 2 athletes to receive invitations. Bloomsburg is the only Division 2 school in the nation with multiple invitations. The NFL Combine will take place February 22nd through the 25th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

 

HS Basketball Finals

Postponed from Saturday, the Heartland Athletic Conference basketball championships will be played Monday night at Montoursville High School. In the girls final, Mount Carmel will play Warrior Run.

That will be followed by the boys final with Loyalsock going against Saint John Neumann.

 

More HS Basketball

Eight area high school basketball teams have qualified for the District 4 playoffs which begin this week. For the first time ever, the first two rounds of those playoffs will be played on the home court of the higher seeded team. The first area team to play will be the Millville boys. The Quakers play at Sayre Tuesday night in a Class A first round game.
