Crake / Boulevard

With the holiday's quickly approaching... the Berwick Jaycees have reached out for help from the Berwick Area United Way... not for dollars... but for people power to get the annual Christmas Boulevard on track. Producing parts and pieces for this year's event begins this coming Saturday... according to Berwick United Way CEO, Ginny Crake. In essence... bring your skills and idea's to the Jaycees building at 11th and Vine Street. Set up for the display is November 29th... with the Boulevard to open December 7th.

 

Transportation Bill

Since early in 2013.... Governor Corbett has been hammering away the fact that state lawmakers need to adopt an estimated 2-and-a-half-billion dollar transportation bill. Lawmakers kicked the can down the road... but just recently the issue has come up again... this time raising the rural interstate speed limit from from 65 to 70 miles an hour. Also associated with the proposed transportation plans are higher fees for car registrations and drivers licenses... issues not popular with the voting public.

 

Safe School Grants

Applications are now being accepted by the state department of education for Pennsylvania School Safety Grants. That word from State Senator John Gordner of Berwick. he Safe Schools grant period is open until early December... with the maximum individual grant capped at $25,000. The grant may be used for programs which address school violence.. including bullying... as well as for security – related technology and equipment.

 

Volunteer Bill

The state House passed a bill to give a tax credit to employers who allow employees who are volunteer first responders to leave work and respond to emergencies. The bill also provides employment protection for responders in both the public and private sectors. It's designed to help the state retain and recruit more volunteers to the fire service.
