Windsor Food's Flood Wall

An unexpected stumbling block to the proposed flood wall project in Bloomsburg to protect two large businesses on the town's west end. One of those firms... Windsor Foods... says it doesn't want a flood wall around it's West 11th Street plant... then pulled the million dollars they pledged for the project. But County Commissioner David Kovach says he... and the two other commissioner's aren't giving up. Ground breaking for the project was expected this year... but no one is certain how the decision made by Windsor Food's will effect overall plans.

Bloomsburg Fair

With the start of the Bloomsburg Fair just weeks away... the Fair Association's directors met with the media to talk about the 158th exposition. Also on hand was Rick Reithoffer who has brought his rides to the fair grounds as long as anyone can remember. He told us there will be new rides for the kids... as well as for teens and adults. The fair begins with a “soft opening” on the 20th.... with the exposition getting underway the following day.

Area Code

We've known about it for months... but on September 21st... all of us will have to dial ten digits to reach others by phone if we're in the 570 area code. You would think businesses in the Susquehanna Valley would need new stationary... business cards and the like... but that apparently isn't the case... so says Tom Hower of Custom Advertising of Berwick. The overlay okayed by the PUC kicks in the 21st... and in essence for local calls you'll have to use 570... then the rest of the number to reach who you're calling.

Dumpster Fire

Short work was made to... what could have been... a disastrous dumper fire behind an apartment building at 123 West Main Street in Bloomsburg Tuesday afternoon. Right around 2:45... some one called in the alarm... and Bloomsburg Fire Chief Bob Rupp said a lot of people pitched in to bring the initial blaze in the dumpster under control such as neighbors and police officers. Firemen using a line off a Bloomsburg pumper truck to make sure the fire was out. No word as to what caused that dumpster in Bloomsburg to catch fire.

Berwick Area United Way

The Berwick Area United Way kicked off the start of it's annual fund raising drive  Wednesday. The organization supports 14 core agencies... but the United Way is slowly changing so say CEO Ginny Crake. Ms. Crake says her organization wants to raise an estimated $400,000... the same goal as the past couple of years.

Microsoft / Nokia

The word that Microsoft plans to purchase wireless phone maker Nokia for $7.3 - billion has startled the business world... both locally and across the nation... as well as around the globe. But what effect will it have locally?  Ric Dworsak of Tel – Us Communications on Route 11 says he believes it won't really be a game changer in the wireless industry. That follows by just hours the announcement that Verizon was purchasing 45 percent of its wireless business from Britain's Vodafone... giving it total control of its wireless division... and boosting its bottom line.

Gas Prices

If you've got to fill up your gas tank... you'll be paying more. The Triple - A Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday shows that self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.62 a gallon... down a penny from the weekend... but up eight cents from a week ago. The reason... unrest in the middle east... forcing the prices of a barrel of crude to hit a high of of $112.00.

Victim Identified

We now know the identity of one of two men killed in a fiery crash last month in Rush Township near Elysburg. The Northumberland County coroner says 46 – year old James Connelly of Danville was identified through tattoos. The second man has yet to be identified. If you recall... the pick up truck they were in hit a tree, rolled over and caught fire killing both men.

Hazleton Shooting

A domestic squabble Monday night... led to the man being shot in the face... allegedly by his girl friend. Police say Joseph Rogoskey and 28 – year old Mary Kirkpatrick were arguing... when Kirkpatrick pulled a weapon and shot Rogoskey. She's now charged with assault... while her boyfriend is being treated at a Hazleton hospital. Kirkpatrick is locked up in the Luzerne County Jail.

Threats

A Freeland man is in the Luzerne County Jail. 57 – year old Wayne Harding allegedly made threats against borough leaders... forcing them to call off last Tuesday night's council meeting. This is not the first time Harding's been in trouble with the law. A month ago he allegedly threatened Freeland's Code Enforcement officer.
