Amber Alert Canceled
An amber alert issued late Thursday night for a missing 10 – year old girl from neighboring Schuylkill County has been canceled. Police say Alexandria Long of Gordon is safe... and was found early this morning.. but they aren't saying where. The child was allegedly abducted by 39 – year old Peter Tarbox late Thursday afternoon. Tarbox was taken into custody... while Alexandria Long is safe at an undisclosed location.
Teachers in the Bloomsburg Area School District begin three days of in-service training Friday morning... as they get ready for the start of school next week. Superintendent Cos Curry says there is one primary issue teachers can expect and it deals with evaluations. Superintendent Curry says an estimated 16 hundred students and 138 teachers will be in the classroom starting Wednesday.
Car in House
A Danville man was uninjured Thursday afternoon when he backed his car out of the Dollar General parking lot in Millville... hitting two cars... and shooting across Route 42 and into a house. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Friday's edition... 83 – year old Carl Dildine, Senior, was not hurt when his car slammed into the rear of the home of John Orlaski. Dildine says he believes his car was stuck in reverse... others feel his mistook the gas pedal for the brakes.
Salem Meth Arrests
Three people were taken into custody Thursday in Salem Township... all accused of operating a meth lab in a house in the 17 – hundred block of Route 11. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition that 33 – year old Jeremy Broyan... 26 – year old Karl Baucher of Berwick... and 58 – year old Alan Kmietowicz were busted three months after police began their investigation. It was launched when Broyan's step – father alerted police he discovered meth making material in the trash. Still on the loose... 34 – year old Corry McCabe of Berwick.
A non – profit group known as Schuylkill on the Move... in neighboring Schuylkill County... is remembering the Sheppton Mine Disaster that began 50 – years ago this Sunday. That's the day David Fellin, Henry Thorne and Louis Bova entered the mine which eventually collapsed that day. Fellin and Thorne were rescued two weeks later, but Bova's remains are still entombed. That program begins Sunday at 2 PM... along Schoolhouse road... just off of Route 924 near Sheppton.
State House Downsizing
Republican State Representative Sam Smith has introduced legislation aimed at reducing the size of the State House by 25 %. Speaker Smith said he believes the 203 member house is too large and inefficient. Smith says the legislation calls for reducing the size of the state house through a Constitutional Amendment. Many political observers say they believe Representative Smith is going through the motions... since there has been no call for downsizing.
Man Struck / Dies
State Police say they have a man in custody... charged with hitting and killing a second man after a confrontation the pair had earlier in the day. Dead is 42 year old Fred Kleman of Plymouth. He was allegedly struck by a car driven by Lorenzo Burgos. The incident happened on Nottingham Street when Kelman asked Burgos to slow down.
Fire Department Money
The Mifflin Township Forest Rangers and Fire Company in Mifflinville... and the Montour Township Fire Company in Rupert are recipients in just over 500 – thousand dollars in grants earmarked in guarding against the threat of forest fires. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources acting secretary Ellen Ferretti said fire departments in rural area's of the state qualified to apply for the aid. According to the state... the Forest Rangers received the maximum grant of $7,500... while Montour Township got a check for $275.
Berwick Armory Meeting
The PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will hold a meeting Monday night dealing with the sale of the Berwick National Guard Armory... which sits at 3rd and Pine Streets. The meeting will deal with the disposing of state armories.. and the advantages of acquiring the property under a historic preservation covenant. Monday's meeting will be held at the Berwick City Hall on North Market Street starting at 6 O'clock.
Just two weeks away from the kickoff to the 2013 regular season.... all area high school football teams will take part in preseason scrimmages tomorrow. Bloomsburg will play at Columbia Montour Vo Tech... Berwick travels to Central Mountain... Central Columbia takes on Wilkes Barre G.A.R. tomorrow morning at Bloomsburg University's Redman Stadium... Danville will scrimmage both Warrior Run and Canton at Canton... and tomorrow night, Southern Columbia plays Shikellamy in Sunbury.
The Phillies begin a ten game home stand Friday by taking on the hottest team in baseball- the Los Angeles Dodgers who have won 40 of their last 48 games. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 to 5.... The New York Mets... defeated the San Diego Padres 4 to 1... and the New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles 8 to 4.
