Blbg Town Council

Bloomsburg Town Council is up to full – strength as of Monday night... following the resignation last month of long – time Mayor Dan Knorr. Now... Carey Howell has taken his place... and apparent Mayor – elect Sandy Davis is taking over Howell's council seat. Ms. Davis won the Democratic primary for mayor in a three way race earlier this year... and was the top write - in vote – getter on the Republican ticket. She will take over the top spot on Town Council early next year.

 

Vincent DiAugustine

The long – time owner of the Berwick Theatre on Front Street has passed. Vincent DiAugustine purchased the theater... then known as “The Strand...” back in 1957. That's 56 – years in the local movie business... keeping folks happy and not raising admission prices since the late 80's. His other business was running a formal wear shop next to the theater... as well as selling memorabilia.

 

Consolidation

A way to save money in the long – run. As we first told you late last week... the Columbia and Montour County Commissioner's will soon look at ways to consolidate services of local government agencies. Consolidation first became top of mind when the commissioner's toured the Columbia County Jail... so says Commission Chairman Chris Young. Also to be studies under a consolidation plan would be 911 dispatch services and transportation. Columbia County Comissioner's have already okayed a plan for a study... with Montour County lawmakers expected to take up the issue when they meet this week.

 

Fuel Gauge

If you're headed out on the highway this week... you'll be paying less for gasoline. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging 3-39 a gallon across northeastern Pennsylvania. More in some locations.... less at others. That's down a penny from the weekend.... and the same price as it was a week ago.

 

Theft Investigation

Still no suspect in custody in connection with the theft of money raised for the family of a McAdoo girl who died in a fire last month. 6 – year old Madison Arner died in the fire... her family lost everything... but during a fund raiser over the weekend... someone walked away with a bag containing an estimated $1,000 in cash. At one time... cops believed they had a possible suspect... but that person has been cleared in the theft.

 

Heat Relief

With temperatures expected to be in the mid to upper 80's this week... if you 're over 55... you might want to consider heading for one of the senior centers operated by the Columbia – Montour Office of Aging. The Office's David Reeder says it's a pretty good place to get out of the heat... and do some networking. There are seven senior centers stretching from Benton to Wilburton to Berwick to Danville that are open on a daily basis.

 

Beat the Heat

The Milton – based Central Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce is attempting to “beat the heat” with a circuit training – style event the 27th of the month. The Chamber's Jeff Shaffer says the event is a competition among all age groups at the Milton YMCA on Bound Avenue. Shaffer says registration is taking place now... and medals will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in each category. Give the Central PA Chamber of Commerce in Milton a call.

 

Hazleton Man Jailed

A Hazleton man is jailed after he allegedly chased two women through the streets with a gun. Francis Lara is facing multiple charges of assault and threats. Hazleton police say Lara allegedly chased a 16 and 18 – year old teenagers in the 500 block of West Maple.... and then on North Locust early Sunday morning.

 

Fatal Wilkes-Barre Shooting

A 24 – year old Wilkes – Barre man is dead after he was shot early Sunday morning in a backyard in the 100 Block of South Grant Street. Police say Vaughn Kemp was chased.... ending up at a party... where his attackers fired shots. No arrests have been made.

 

Hazleton Park

For the past month the McKinley Street Park in Hazleton has been open for business, but there isn't too much foot traffic. A little less than $500,000 in federal stimulus money was used to build the park by the Hazleton City Authority. Now... the authority will meet soon to see if the green space can be spiffed up a bit to attract traffic.
