Bicentennial Muster

Activities pick up at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds starting Friday in support of the 200th birthday of Columbia County. And one of the displays this weekend deals with life in the military in 1863... in the middle of the Civil War. About a dozen reenactors depicting a federal artillery battery will be on hand for the event so says Eric Stahley. All the reenactors will be dressed in period clothing and will be part of the Bicentennial celebration of Columbia County. There will be a lot of things to do at the fairgrounds Saturday... including a fireworks display at dusk.

 

ATV Accident

A 13 – year old Numidia youngster is in the Geisinger Medical Center recovering from injuries received when the ground under his ATV collapsed... ejecting him. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition.. Jeffrey Cox and a friend were on a quick, pre – dinner drive when the accident occurred. That sent first responders scurrying to the 21 – hundred block of Mill Road. A medical helicopter transported the teen to Geisinger... where he's being treated for an apparent broken leg.

 

Caregiver Support Forum

State Representative David Millard is holding another session on Thursday in a series dealing with caregiver support. There are times... according to Representative Millard... when we're thrust into a position of taking care of an elderly relative. The session will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital. Call Representative Millard's office to RSVP.

 

AGAPE Clothing

Faith – based AGAPE is on a mission.... they're seeking clothing that is clean and good condition... as well as shoes for distribution. AGAPE's Kathy Lowe says clothing donations will be accepted this Friday and next Monday starting at 10 AM. Ms. Lowe says no children's clothing will be accepted. You can drop off your clothing at the AGAPE building at 19 East 7th Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Shickshinny Fire

A Huntington Township family... near Shickshinny... is homeless after a fire raced through the modular home on Thornehill Road Tuesday afternoon. 35 – year old Jamie Piatt was apparently lighting the furnace when he heard a “pop” and saw smoke and flames shooting from the air ducts. By the time firemen arrived... the home was fully involved. Now, Piatt and his mother, 57 – year old Jenna, are staying with relatives.

 

Hazleton Fire

One Hazleton firefighter was injured and rushed to a hospital Tuesday after falling through the floor of a home that was on fire. The name of the firefighter wasn't released... but he was treated for injuries and later discharged. The firemen were fighting a blaze in the 400 block of Keifer Avenue when the first responder fell about eight feet while battling flames on the second floor. A state police fire marshal will be called in to determine how the Keifer Avenue fire started.

 

Mt. Carmel Fire

A 13 – year old Mt. Carmel teenager is in trouble with the law. The teen admitting to police he set a vacant building on North Chestnut Street on fire Sunday night to keep warm. A 12 – year old companion is also in trouble. Authorities say the building has been vacant for the past three years. The 13 – year old is charged with arson... the 12 – year old with trespassing.

 

ACF Jobs

An estimated 100 job applicants showed up Tuesday to fill out paperwork for a possible job with ACF Industries in Milton. The plant made rail cars, but shuttered operations three years ago. Now... the company says it plans to re – open the plant... but didn't say when. A second career fair will take place Wednesday... at Career Link in Sunbury.

 

Beating Probe

Police investigators in Hazleton now say a man beaten and left for dead was dragged at least 175 feet from in front of a home. 33 – year old Andrew Groyl remains in the trauma unit at an Allentown hospital after he was found near North Locust Street nearly two weeks ago. Now... police have seized computers... cell phones... weapons... as well as blood – spattered material from a Lafayette Court home.

 

Nanticoke Assault

A Nanticoke businessman has been arrested after confronting police at his bar. 38 – year old Paul Halliday was busted after police responded to a report of an assault... later finding his girlfriend hurt and lying on a restroom floor. Halliday initially nailed the door shut at the Prospect cafe... threatening cops who responded. They later called for an ambulance... and that upset Halliday. Now... Halliday is charged with allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

 

Unemployment Rate

Unemployment in the Hazleton / Wilkes – Barre / Scranton area is up during January. It jumped three – tenths of a percent... to a seasonally adjusted 9.8%. That's eight - tenths of a percentage point higher than during January of last year.

BU Swimming

The Bloomsburg University men's swimming program won two post season awards. Jake Harner of the Huskies was named the PSAC freshman of the year, and Stu Marvin is the PSAC Coach of the year.

 

BU Wrestling

Six Bloomsburg University wrestlers are in Des Moines, Iowa preparing for the NCAA Division One Championships which begin Thursday. Kim Schooley will be covering the championships for the WHLM Stations. You can hear Kim's first report in Thursday afternoon's 5 o'clock news.

 

NCAA

The NCAA men's basketball tournament began last night with two play-in games in Dayton, Ohio. In the first game, North Carolina A & T beat Liberty 73-72. North Carolina A & T will play Louisville Thursday night. In last night's second game Saint Mary's defeated Middle Tennessee 67 – 54. St Mary's play's Michigan State Thursday afternoon.

 

NCAA Wednesday

Two more play-in games will be played tonight in Ohio: LIU, Brooklyn plays James Madison and Boise State takes on La Salle.
