Still no word as to what caused an early Sunday morning fire at the Creekside Family Restaurant north of Orangeville. Flames were shooting through the roof when firemen arrived... and although they had some water aboard their apparatus... it was initially in short supply.... so says Orangeville fire chief Kevin Boyd. Chief Boyd said a State Police Fire Marshal has been called in, but he was unable to pinpoint the cause. Owner Rod Kile says he doesn't know if he'll rebuild.
A Montour County mobile home went up in flames Sunday night... and was destroyed. Authorities responding to a structure fire found the home involved in flames on Blee Hill Road... in Derry Township. But despite help from a half dozen different companies... plus the Millville fire department's tanker... nothing was able to be saved.
Berwick Drug Bust
A Berwick couple is facing a host of drug charges after they were arrested over the weekend at a Fifth Street home. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition 22 – year old Zachariah Babb... and his gal pal 20 – year old Shalyn Blankenship were arrested Saturday night as cops served a warrant. Found by police were bundles of heroin worth about $5,000 on the street... in addition to just over $400 in cash. The pair is lodged in the Columbia County Prison on $75,000 bail.
If you're in the political game.... or thinking about jumping in... Tuesday is the first day you can pick up nominating petitions from the Columbia County Election office in Bloomsburg. Chief Registrar Matt Repasky says some folks forget following the presidential election.... is still are elected positions to fill through a primary held in March. Repasky says many of the offices up for election include school district seats... as well as borough and town of Bloomsburg openings.... such as in the case to select a new Mayor in the fall of 2013.
Civil Rights activist Julian Bond was in Bloomsburg at the start of the weekend. He was delivering a speech at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. dinner on the Bloomsburg University campus. Speaking with reporters late Friday afternoon... he gave high marks to President Obama. Bond says Mr. Obama has done a lot despite being stonewalled by Congress and the Senate. Mr. Bond's activism goes back to the heyday of the civil rights struggle... forming the Student Non – violent Coordinating Committee... and serving four terms in the Georgia house... and six terms in the Georgia Senate. Today... he continues to write and lecture about the civil rights movement.
Hazleton Home Invasion
Hazleton police are investigating a home invasion which took place early Sunday morning along Hayes Street. Police say three men...holding weapons... smashed through the front door... holding the homeowner and his two kids at bay. The trio demanded money and ransacked the home... making off with a TV and a video game console. No one is in custody.
A Bloomsburg woman was arrested for her alleged role in a conspiracy to steal jewelry from a Sugar Notch home... in Luzerne County. 27 – year old Stacey Paul is out on bail after she was charged with theft and receiving stolen property. Paul and two others... targeted a Freed Street home... taking items and selling them to stores that deal in gold in the Wyoming Valley.
House and Senate lawmakers are investigating a nearly $100 - million shortfall at the federal Job Corps program that has prompted the Labor Department to freeze enrollment at all 125 job centers around the country. The move would effect the Job Corps Center in Drums... near Hazleton... and could lead to the layoff of nearly 260 people who work there... and lose an estimated 400 student. Meantime... Senator Bob Casey has called on the agency's inspector general to investigate.. what he calls... serious questions about the management by the department.
Construction is well underway for a new 3 – point – 8 million dollar district forestry office along Route 42 in the Weiser forest complex between Aristes and the Kline Reservoir. The complex will replace the district office in Cressona... where space has become a premium. The 38 district employees are expected to be in their new home by this summer.
Girls HS Basketball
The Danville High School girls basketball team had a very successful weekend. On Friday night, they beat Shamokin to clinch the Heartland Conference Division One title. On Saturday night at Williamsport High School, they beat Benton 66-61 in overtime to win the first ever overall Heartland Conference championship.

The Bloomsburg High School boys and girls basketball teams will begin the District 4 Class AA playoffs Tuesday night at the McCloskey Center in Danville. At 6 O'clock... the Bloomsburg girls will play Lewisburg followed by the Bloomsburg boys against Hughesville. You can hear both of those games Tuesday on the WHLM Stations starting with the pregame show at 5:40.
Two area wrestling teams won titles over the weekend. On Friday night at Nelson Field House, Bloomsburg University beat Lock Haven 30-7 to win the school's first outright Eastern Wrestling League Championship. The Huskies final dual meet will be this Thursday night at home against Binghamton.
Central Columbia Wrestling
The Central Columbia High School wrestling team finished first in the East Sectional tournament which concluded Saturday at Hughesville. Next up for area wrestlers is the District 4 tournament which begins Friday at Williamsport High School.
NASCAR Cup Series
Danica Patrick grabs the pole position for next Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series season – opening Daytona 500. It's the first time a woman will lead a 43 car field to a green flag in a NASCAR Cup Series event.
