Sandusky Denied New Trial

Jerry Sandusky lost a bid for a new trial Wednesday when a judge rejected his argument that his lawyers were not given enough time to prepare for the three-week proceeding that ended with a 45-count guilty verdict. Judge John Cleland's 27-page order said lawyers for the former Penn State assistant football coach conceded that their post-trial review turned up no material that would have changed their trial strategy. He also rejected post-sentencing motions regarding jury instructions, hearsay testimony and other matters. Sandusky is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison sentence on a child sex abuse conviction.

 

Flood Watch

Mother nature has been giving all of us fits. A week ago... we had single digit temperatures... and Wednesday we're expected to be in the upper 50's... touching 60. It's all due to a warm front pushing its way east... and once that passes... temps will be more seasonable. That warm front will bring us a lot of rain over the next day... and that's prompted the National Weather Center to issue a flood watch up and down the Susquehanna Valley. The Susquehanna River will rise, but Meteorologist say they don't believe we'll see river flooding. However, we'll need to keep an eye on the creeks and streams running through our area.

 

Dillon Sentenced

A Bloomsburg man will spend the next 10 months to two year in the Columbia County Prison for a wreck that paralyzed his then – girlfriend. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... 21 – year old Patrick Dillon will be allowed to work in the family business as he serves his jail time. Dillon's sentence stemmed from a conviction of drunk driving in a June 2011 wreck which left ex – girlfriend Alexandria Allen in a wheel chair for life as a paraplegic with the her family facing million of dollars worth of future care.

 

Health Care

We got a sneak peak at Governor Corbett's budget address he'll deliver next week. In it... a multi – million dollar health care proposal. Acting PA Health Secretary Michael Wolf made the announcement during a news conference at the St. Luke's Miners Health Center in McAdoo....in Schuylkill County. The proposal also calls for expanding program to help attract and retain health care practitioners in rural and underserved areas of the state.

 

Barletta / Obama

President Obama on the road in Las Vegas on Tuesday says now is the time to fix the nation's broken immigration system. And 11th District Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton agrees. But, Barletta in a statement from his Washington office, says the Obama plan is nothing new... adding it does not address the underlying causes of illegal immigration. The two – term Republican congressman went on to say that the government needs to enforce laws now on the books.

 

Shamokin Fire Folo

Shamokin police have arrested a 22 – year old man... charging him with a Monday night arson fire which extensively damaged four vacant buildings. James Neidlinger was arraigned before a district magistrate in Shamokin Tuesday afternoon... after he told police he set fire to a pile of leaves outside the vacant buildings on Sunbury Street. Now... Neidlinger is charged with four counts of arson.. and is lodged in the Northumberland County Prison. What has yet to be determined... if Neidlinger is the person responsible for seven other fires in the Shamokin area the past week.

 

BTE

The Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble is on stage this weekend. BTE's Laurie McCants says the company will be performing an updated version of Shakespeare's “As You Like It.” Ms. McCants says “As You Like It” will be preformed Friday and Saturday night at 7:30... at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Center Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Hazleton Budget

After months of discussion... the Hazleton city council Tuesday night okayed their final budget for the 2013 fiscal year on a vote of 3 to 2. Property owners will see a 45% tax increase... far from the initial 83% first proposed late last year. Also a new storm water system maintenance fee will be imposed.... and increased per capita and earned income taxes. The current plans keep police and fire department staffing at 2012 levels.

 

Boat Docks

Authorities are investigating the theft of eight aluminum boat docks and copper wiring... locked inside a storage building... at Moon Lake Park near Hunlock Creek. The items were stolen sometime between the 15th and 23rd of this month... and it's believed they're destined for a scrap dealer. Even though the gates to the park are locked... there hasn't been security since budget cutbacks went into effect a couple of years ago.

 

Corbett Poll

A new poll shows Gov. Tom Corbett's popularity shrinking, even though he scored points for challenging the NCAA sanctions against Penn State. The Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday says 51% of registered voters believe the Republican does not deserve re-election next year.  31% said Corbett should be re-elected.

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University Men's basketball team met the PSAC's hottest team Wednesday night at the Nelson Field House. East Stroudsburg, the defending conference champion, had a 15 and 2 overall record going into the bout with the Huskies. BU brought the score within one point but couldn't hold on; the ESU final was 77-68. The Women's team won their game handily, 86-43. BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team has moved up to 14th in the nation in Division I. The Huskies have two dual meets this weekend. They wrestle at Cleveland State Saturday afternoon and at Clarion on Sunday afternoon.

 

Boys HS Basketball

In boys high school basketball Tuesday night... Crestwood downed Berwick 50 – 39 and Southern Columbia defeated Milton 46 - 34

 

Girls HS Basketball

In girls basketball Tuesday night... It was Warrior Run over Southern Columbia 57 – 38... Lewisburg defeating Central Columbia 45 – 26... Danville downed Shikellamy 65 – 45... Millville getting by Sullivan County 47 – 36 and Benton defeating Bloomsburg 60 – 40.

 

NHL

In the National Hockey League Tuesday night: The New York Rangers skated by the Philadelphia Flyers 2 to 1.
