Flood Watch for Area

A COLD FRONT WILL PUSH THROUGH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. HEAVY RAIN FROM SHOWERS AND SCATTERED

THUNDERSTORMS DUE TO THE FRONT COULD PRODUCE FLOODING AS THE

SHOWERS MOVE THROUGH. SNOW MELT WILL ALSO ADD TO THE STREAM RISES.

RIVER FLOODING IS THEN POSSIBLE INTO THURSDAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STATE COLLEGE HAS ISSUED A

FLOOD WATCH FOR A PORTION OF CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA INCLUDING

ADAMS... COLUMBIA... CUMBERLAND... DAUPHIN... FRANKLIN... FULTON... HUNTINGDON... JUNIATA... LANCASTER... LEBANON... MIFFLIN... MONTOUR... NORTHUMBERLAND... PERRY... SCHUYLKILL... SNYDER... SOUTHERN LYCOMING... SULLIVAN... UNION AND YORK.

 

* FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING.

 

* HEAVY RAIN AND MELTING SNOW WILL PUSH SMALLER AREA WATERWAYS HIGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...AND THEN POSE A THREAT FOR MINOR FLOODING ALONG THE LARGER CREEKS AND RIVERS.

 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS.

 

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING ON SMALL

STREAMS... CREEKS... POOR DRAINAGE... URBAN AND LOW-LYING AREAS BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS. RIVER FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE.

 

Weather & Roads

What a difference a day makes. On Monday... we were battling wet snow on the way to work. Tuesday morning...it's fog and black ice. That has forced Benton Area... Millville Area... Southern Columbia... as well as Sullivan County into starting school two hours later than usual. PennDOT trucks have been keeping main highways clear... but it's the in – town roads that are treacherous... especially near intersections. With temperatures headed into the mid 40's... coupled with a bit of rain... all the snow received on Monday should disappear quickly.

 

339 Wreck

The snow and freezing rain on Monday produced a host of crashes across the region. One of the most spectacular happened late Monday morning on Route 339... the Nescopeck – Mifflinville Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... 29 – year old Shawn Smith lost control of his SUV. It jumped the guardrail and ended up on the ice of Drake's Pond. Smith was able to get out, but 22 – year old Katy Stang was trapped and eventually rescued by a first responder from the Berwick Area Ambulance Association.

 

Bloomsburg Mills Project

If things fall into place... a vacant lot across from the former Bloomsburg Mills complex on 6th Street could see a lot of construction activity early next year. The wraps were taken off last night in front of Town Council on plans to construct a three story, 40 unit apartment complex for low income elderly.  The proposed project is funded with state dollars. And if the funding is approved... and permits granted... ground could be broken in about a year.

 

Water Line Repair

United Water crews spent Monday morning repairing a six inch in diameter water main which broke overnight Sunday... shutting off water to homes along a portion of Lightstreet Road. The utility's Bob Manbeck says the crew dug up the street... then simply placed a clamp over the leaking portion of the pipe. It's believed cold weather played a factor in damaging the pipe... as well as several others around Bloomsburg since Sunday.

 

Gas Prices

The price of gasoline is slowly creeping upward. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows gas six cents higher than it was a week ago. At the pump... the price for self – serve, unleaded regular is checking in at an average of $3.56 a gallon... up a penny from the weekend. The reason... high crude oil prices.

 

Hazle Twp Fire

Authorities in Luzerne County have identified the woman who died in a Sunday night house fire in Hazle Township. 47 – year old Mary Louise Cook died in the blaze at 1354 North Church Street. A man... identified as Anthony Gentle... was burned. He's being treated at an Allentown hospital. Court records show Cook had a history of setting fire. Police are still interviewing people in an effort to determine how the Sunday night fire started in Hazle Township.

 

Hazleton Fire

A state police fire marshal has ruled a blaze in the 700 block of Seybert Street in Hazleton as being of an undetermined origin... but it did start in the basement. The fire was discovered early Monday morning... forcing three people out of the two story structure. One of the families two dogs died. The home was extensively damaged.

 

Kulpmont Fire

A fire marshal walked through the ruins of a house in Kulpmont in Northumberland County on Monday... hours after flames broke out at a home on Chestnut Street. No determination as to what started the fire in Kulpmont.

 

Coal Twp Fire

A fire marshal is expected to be on the scene of a Monday night fire which destroyed a home in the Springfield section of Coal Township. Firefighters were called to Wabash Street early Monday evening when flames were spotted. No one was at home when the blaze broke out... but a dog and cat didn't survive.

 

Shamokin Fire

Firemen were called late last night to a house fire at the corner of East Sunbury and Franklin Streets in Shamokin. That escalated into a multi – alarm blaze before the flames were put out.

 

NEPA Unemployment

Unemployment in the Hazleton, Scranton / Wilkes – Barre area was up one tenth of a percentage point in December... with the area checking in at 9.5 %. In November... unemployment stood at 9.4 %. The Department of Labor and Industry says the region's rate was the highest in the state for the 33rd consecutive month. The department says that gains in sales jobs were offset by reductions in the service industry.

BU Wrestling

Bloomsburg University's Justin Grant has been named the co-PSAC wrestler of the week. A junior from Easton, Grant improved his record to 18 and 3 on Friday with a 9-4 win over Edinboro's Ernest James at 285 pounds. That helped the Huskies to a 19-18 win which improved their dual meet record to 12 and 2. Bloomsburg wrestles at Cleveland State this Saturday afternoon.

 

Postponements

Monday night's weather was a contributing factor to the postponement of boys and girls high school basketball games across the region. All will be made up at a later date.

Tuesday night in boys high school basketball... Berwick is at home against Crestwood.

 

Girls High School Basketball 

In girls basketball Tuesday night... Danville is at Shikellamy... Central Columbia is at Lewisburg... Millville plays at Sullivan County... Southern Columbia is at Warrior Run and Bloomsburg is at Benton.
