A little bit of a Bloomsburg business became a part of history earlier this week. Bloomsburg Carpet on the New Berwick Highway... providing about 500 square yards of carpet which became part of President Obama's inauguration. This is not the first time Bloomsburg Carpet has been called upon. The floors of the US Senate and the House of Representatives are also covered with Columbia County – produced carpet.
The coldest weather of the season settled into the Susquehanna Valley early Wednesday morning. It's was 6 degrees in Columbia and Montour Counties during the morning drive to work... with a windchill factor of 1 below zero. However, one of the coldest area's in the region is Lopez in Sullivan County.The National Weather Service says the temperature dipped to 3 degrees... with a wind chill of minus ten.
Some tense moments for Lightstreet and Espy volunteer firefighters late Tuesday afternoon. They were called to the Sunoco gas station on Papermill Road... near Route 487 to track down a smoke odor. Lightstreet Fire Chief Darren Shaffer said it only took minutes to spot the trouble in a newly installed display case near the store's entrance. There was no damage to the building.... with firemen on scene for less than 30 minutes.
Fire / EMS Grant
A windfall for 19 volunteer fire departments and ambulance associations in Columbia County. State Representative David Millard says the state will split an estimated $214,000 from an ongoing grant program created by the state legislature and managed by the Pennsylvania Emergency management agency. For the most part... the grants range from $6,600 for Berwick Area Ambulance and Millville EMS to $12,600 dollars for the Reliance Fire Company of Berwick... as well as Bloomsburg. The average grant is $11,500. The money is designed for construction, renovation, equipment purchases... as well as training.
Berwick United Way
They went over the top. The Berwick United way reaching their goal of $400,000 for their 2012 campaign and then some. The organization's Ginny Crake said they did so despite a questionable economy in the greater Berwick area. The Berwick United Way helps at least a dozen non – profit agencies across the area.
So you have your W-2 from your employer.... and your taxes are prepared.... but there's a problem.It seems the Internal Revenue Service is not accepting any paperwork from taxpayers so says tax preparer Kim Schooley. Appearing on the Tuesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... Schooley says the tax code to be used in 2013 for 2012 returns was not passed by congress until very early in the year... and that means a delay within the IRS. However, Schooley says you should be able to file your tax forms by the end of the month.
Hazleton Police are charging a man with killing his ex – girlfriend last month... but they don't know where he is. 35 – year old Oscar Lozano Garcia is wanted in the strangulation death of 32 – year old Maria Brea. She was found dead in her East Diamond Avenue apartment... three days after being reported missing by her family. It's believed Garcia has fled the state.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health says Luzerne County ranks 8th in the number of flu cases sweeping the state. The cases were counted from early October through January 12th. Overall... Luzerne County doctors were treating more than 600 flu cases... which included one death from the illness in Wilkes – Barre.
He's known as Victim 6... and he testified at Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse trial last summer. Now he's suing the former Penn State assistant football coach... Sandusky's founded Second Mile Charity and the university. In papers filed in Philadelphia federal court... Victim 6 said Sandusky's behavior was "ratified" by The Second Mile charity and Penn State and that the organizations acted with reckless indifference to his rights. He's seeking at least $75,000 in damages.
Fire investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a three alarm blaze in Allentown Tuesday Morning. Firemen were first called to Youell's Oyster House at 23rd and Walnut Streets before dawn... and the blaze escalated to three alarms. Authorities say five firefighters were injured. They were treated for minor injuries and released from an Allentown hospital.
Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Shamokin will see an increase in Coal Township police patrolling the hallways. School officials says the extra police presence wasn't due to any particular threat... but due to the mass shootings at a Newtown, Ct. elementary school last month. Earlier this month... a student posted an allegedly threatening note on Facebook... but police say that situation has been taken care off.
Wednesday night in College basketball, the BU Men's & Women's teams were on the road at Mansfield. The Women won their game 93-73. The Men won theirs in their second double-overtime victory of the season, 82-81. You can hear the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:
