Farm Show Rolls On
There are a lot of things to see and do at the 97th State Farm Show in Harrisburg. If you're a die hard agri – businessman... it will take you more than one day to get through the million square foot complex. State Representative David Millard says he gets a real kick when he visits the exhibition... including chatting with teens involved in 4 – H and Future Farmers of America. This year's farm show runs through Saturday evening.
Wineries / PA Preferred
In an effort to support local wineries, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has announced a partnership with the Pennsylvania Winery Association. The agreement will allow PA Preferred wineries to place up to ten products in select PA Wine & Spirits Stores.
Where else can you go see a first run motion picture for $4.00 a person... popcorn and soft drink a buck each... but at the Berwick Theatre on East Front Street? 88 – year old Vincent DiAugustine has run the place since 1957 when it was known as the Strand, but he may be forced to call it quits if his motion picture distributors force him to go to a digital playback system... instead of film. But DiAugustine says he's been told not to worry about getting the capital for the estimated $70,000 upgrade. Although no drop dead date has been given to small theater owners to convert their playback system... DiAugustine knows the time is near. Also on tap... a series of fundraisers to help DiAugustine to finance the conversion.
Brass Key Fire
An electrical problem in the basement is being blamed for a Thursday morning fire which substantially damaged a Sunbury bar. A state fire marshal says he's trying to pinpoint the problem which caused the Brass Key on Reagan Street to go up in flames. No one was inside the building when the fire broke out... and the two apartments on the second floor were vacant.
Weis Markets / Danville
Sunbury – based Weis Markets is expanding it's Danville store on Continental Boulevard. Company officials say the building will be enlarged by 3,200 square feet and will include a new pharmacy as well as other departments. Construction is expected to take about a year.
A New York City man is in the Luzerne County Jail... charged with allegedly sexually abusing a 3 – year old girl. 57 – year old Michael Roman is accused of assaulting the toddler in the middle of the night... as people slept in an apartment on South Main Street in Wilkes – Barre.
Wilkes – Barre Shooting
Still no suspects in a shooting that has left a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Police say 21 – year old Michael Kubiak was shot as he walked along Metcalf Street in Wilkes – Barre late Wednesday night. Kubiak is being treated for wounds of the face, chest, ribs and thigh.
A quarry operation in Dorrance Township may be expanding. Township supervisors voting to approve a conditional use permit to expand the operation of Pennsy Supply near Small Mountain Road. However, the operation is now closer to homes in the area. Thursday night's decision comes after eight hearings on the project.
Girls HS Basketball
The Berwick High School girls basketball team was at home last night against Wyoming Valley West. When the game was over... Wyoming Valley West went back home with a victory in their pocket beating Berwick 56 – 45. In girls basketball tonight, Central Columbia is at home against Loyalsock.
There is a busy schedule of boys basketball Friday night including Southern Columbia at Central Columbia... Bloomsburg at Saint John Neuman... and Danville at home against Jersey Shore.
Bloomsburg University Basketball
There is college basketball Friday night at Bloomsburg University's Nelson Field House for the first time since December 2nd. The Huskies' Men's and Women's teams swept Lock Haven. The Women won their game 80-53. The Men took their game into Double Overtime, ending in a losing-streak-breaking 106-98 victory.
