Flu Season

Have you had the flu yet this year.... if you haven't.... you're lucky. But if you have... you've joined the ranks of thousands of people who suffered through the sneezes and sniffles... and the rotten feeling you get. Geisinger Health Systems Dr. Lisa Esolen says it's a moderately severe year for flu.... and it's not in any one particular area of Columbia and Montour Counties. If you haven't had the flu yet this year... there is still time to get a flu shot from your health care professional.... designed to keep the illness at bay.

 

Chesapeake Bay Report

With the Susquehanna River flowing through Columbia and Montour Counties... it plays a very important part in the life of the Chesapeake Bay. Now...the Chesapeake Bay Foundation is out with its 2012 report... and it shows an improving picture... but still a failing grade in terms of pollution and it's effect on aquatic life and economics. The foundation's Harry Campbell says the report puts the bay's health at a score of 32... well short of the 70 score that would represent a saved bay.

 

Farm Show Honey
The 97th Pennsylvania Farm Show rolls along in Harrisburg.... as folks take in the sights and sounds of this year's exposition.  An area drawing a lot of interest is beekeeping. It's becoming a popular hobby in across the state. As a matter of fact, Lee Miller who chairs the show's Apiary Products division, says the number of honey products being judged at the Farm Show is growing. Just this year they added a category for "sauces." There are beekeeping demonstrations throughout the remaining days of the farm show, which ends Saturday evening.

 

Berwick Fire

A Berwick family is being helped by the American Red Cross after they were forced out their Vine Street home by fire late Monday night. It's believed the fire started in the chimney of the home... forcing a couple and their three kids... and two dogs out onto a second story roof. No one was injured.

 

Stillwater Crash

A Benton woman received minor injuries Tuesday night... when she rolled her car... trying to avoid a deer near Stillwater. State Police at Bloomsburg tell us 53 – year old Leeann Branas was northbound on Route 487 around 5:30 Tuesday night when a deer crossed in front of her Pontiac Aztec. That's when she lost control... and the car rolled over once. Ms. Branas was taken to Bloomsburg Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

 

MMI Prep Protest

Students at MMI Preparatory School in Freeland aren't happy about the dismissal of a high – ranking school administrator.... so they staged a sit – in in the school's common area. An e-mail sent to parents last week... said MMI V.P. Dr. Jaclyn Fowler is no longer working at the school... for an unspecified reason. School officials says it was simply a one – day protest... saying the students were exercising their constitutional rights without fear of retribution.

 

West Hazleton Council

West Hazleton Borough Council has a new president. Mark Yeager... a Republican... was appointed to the job after serving the past seven years on council... replacing Democrat William Sharkey, Jr. It's the first time in five years... West Hazleton has had a new council president.

 

Home Burglar Held

A would – be home invader got more than what he bargained for this week when he tried to break into a home on Regent Street in Wilkes – Barre. When Augusto-Eber Pretzantzin-Barrios tried to enter the home... he was confronted by the home owner with a weapon. Robert King held Barrios at gunpoint until police arrived. Barrios is now in the Luzerne County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

 

Schuylkill Theft

Police continue their investigation into the theft of an estimated $40,000 worth of ATV's and dirt bikes in Schuylkill County. The two ATV and three bikes were snatched early Tuesday morning from Matto Cycle in Port Carbon... near Pottsville. Investigators say the thieves loaded to machines into a truck... and left the area.

Boys Basketball

Millville and Benton renewed their boys high school basketball rivalry last night. At the end of the fourth quarter... Millville defeated Benton 45 to 43. In other games: Tunkhannock downed Berwick 66 – 54... Danville rolled over Mifflinburg 67 – 22... Lewisburg defeated Central Columbia 55 – 46... Southern Columbia barely got by Mount Carmel 62 to 61... and Muncy defeated Bloomsburg 63 – 58.

 

Girls Basketball

In girls basketball Tuesday night Berwick downed Tunkhannock 51 - 24.

 

BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team is ranked 24th in the nation in Division I this week. The Huskies have an 8 and 2 record after Saturday's win over Maryland.

 

NBA

In the NBA Tuesday night.... it was the Brooklyn Nets over the Philadelphia 76er's 109 – 89.
