Berwick Meth Lab

We're only a couple of days into the new year... and already Berwick Police have taken down a suspected meth lab... this time in a residential neighborhood in the 400 – block of East 6th Street. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting... when police and drug agents came a calling on Thursday... arresting 49 – year old Barry Zwalkuski... and his 41 – year old cousin... Tracie. A third person was taken into custody, but was later released. Two kids living in the home were at school... but they're now staying with relatives. The Zwalkuski's are in the Columbia County Prison.

 

Millville Fire

Volunteer firefighters from the heart of Columbia County were called to Millville late Thursday night.  The alarm sounding around 11:30 when flames were spotted coming from Columbia Wood Industries on Route 42. Authorities say the fire began in a break room in the rear of the building... but it's not known what started the blaze. Investigators will try and figure that out. Columbia Wood Industries manufactures wooden pallets and crates.

 

Red Cross

When you need them... they'll be there. We're talking about the Bloomsburg Chapter of the American Red Cross. Volunteers have been responding recently to a series of house fires... and Executive Director Rita Inklovich says volunteers are being kept busy. Ms. Inklovich says lodging is arranged for a three day stretch... so folks can get their lives back in order. Local operations... such as for fire victims... are financed through local donations... and the services are free to those folks effected.

 

Assault

A Danville woman remains in the Montour County Jail after she allegedly cut her boyfriend’s neck with a steak knife. The incident happened late New Year's Eve... landing 45 – year old Sharon Arndt of East Market Street behind bars. The stabbing happened after Arndt and boyfriend... Jeff Shearer... had an argument. Arndt is scheduled for a preliminary hearing January 9th.

 

Farm Show

A sneak preview of the State's 97th Farm Show gets underway at midday Friday in Harrisburg... with hundreds of thousands of people expected to go through the million square foot exhibition area during the next week. For State Representative David Millard... the annual event highlights what Pennsylvania is famous for. That sneak peak begins at 12 noon... with opening ceremonies scheduled for Saturday morning.

 

BTE / Flood Stories

Want to cure an acting bug you may have? You'll have the opportunity to do so when the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble holds open auditions Saturday for their spring production of Flood Stories, Too.  The BTE's James Goode says auditions will be held Saturday morning at 10 O'clock at the Alvina Krause Theatre in the 200 block of Centre Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Hazleton Budget

The City of Hazleton finally has a new budget. City council Thursday night adopting the $8.6 - million 2013 budget. It includes a 45% property tax hike... not the 83% first proposed by mayor Joseph Yannuzzi.... or the 23% plan pushed by council. Under the plan... the police department loses $125,000... while the fire department budget is trimmed by $75,000. There will be no layoffs in those two departments.

 

Hazleton Fire

The manufacturing of bottle caps at a Hazleton area plant came to a standstill on Thursday when a fire broke out at Silgan White Cap. Authorities say the fire is believed to have started in an oven at the Jaycee Drive plant. It eventually spread to the firm's ventilation system. Workers got out of the building, but later returned.

 

GENCO Expansion

One company at the Humboldt Industrial Park near Hazleton continues to grow. GENCO... a Pittsburgh – based logistics company... has expanded for the second time in four months... and is leasing a 408,000 square foot building from Mericle Commercial Real Estate. A spokesman for CAN DO, Incorporated said the expansion is due to the interstate highway system... as well as the quality of the area's workforce.

 

Barletta Swearing In

11th district Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton was sworn – in to his second term during ceremonies in Washington on Thursday. Barletta's district includes Columbia County. Also sworn in was congressman Tom Marino of Williamsport. Marino's sprawling district includes Montour, Northumberland and Lycoming Counties... and stretches north to the New York State line and east into the Pocono's.

 

Man Charged

Taking allegedly inappropriate pictures of a four year old girl you're babysitting can get you into a lot of trouble. That's what's happened to 21 – year old Brian Kelson, Junior... who allegedly took the snapshots while the Northumberland County family he was living with was out for the evening. The child's father discovered the photos. Kelson admitted taking one of the pictures.... but claims the rest are fake.

Boys HS Basketball

In boys' high school basketball Thursday night... Pittston Area defeated Berwick 65 – 49.

 

Girls HS Basketball

In girls basketball, in a match up of unbeaten teams Danville just getting by Southern 48 to 47... In another girls game... Shikellamy downed Bloomsburg 63 – 38.

 

BU Basketball

It was a battle of nationally ranked women's college basketball teams Friday night in Erie when Bloomsburg University, ranked 22nd took on 8th ranked Gannon in a game that ended in a 72-68 Gannon victory. Gannon swept the evening, winning the Men's match 81-55. You can hear the details from the night with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:

 

 

BU plays at Mercyhurst Saturday night. The pregame to the Women's game starts at 5:10.

 

BU Wrestling

There will be college wrestling Saturday at Nelson Field House with Bloomsburg University taking on Maryland in a match that begins at 5.

 

Bowl Game

In college football, in the Fiesta Bowl Thursday night... Oregon raced by No. 7 Kansas State 35 – 17.
