The Town of Bloomsburg is on a buying binge... purchasing flood damaged homes in the 900 block of West Main Street. Town Administrator Bill Lowthart said Monday night one house was acquired last week... a second Monday... with six other properties acquired by the end of the week. That leaves three homes to be acquired... something the town hopes to consummate by the end of December. Total cost.. an estimated $800,000 which the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency will reimburse.
Within the next week and a half... the Bloomsburg Town Council will approve a final budget for 2013. It contains a $99,000 deficit... with council having to dip into reserves to the tune of $164,000 for one – time expenditures. But... Mayor Dan Knorr says the spending plan will balance itself out. The proposal is now available for viewing at town hall during business hours. Council will vote on the proposed spending plan the 21st.
Two Berwick area residents face arraignment later this month after they were busted Sunday on a number of drug charges. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition... Christopher Keim... and his girlfriend.. 21 – year old Abby Long were arrested by Berwick Police after they stopped Keim's car. Police finding a couple of bundles of heroin on Long... and what appeared to be more of the drug... in the center console of the car. Following a preliminary hearing Sunday night... the pair was remanded to the Columbia County Prison.. awaiting a December 18th arraignment.
Kiddie Porn Charges
A Bloomsburg man has been arrested by Luzerne County authorities on kiddie porn charges after allegedly downloading an estimated 54 files of children on his laptop. Authorities looked in four different counties before finding 28 – year old Jeremy Box of Bloomsburg at a work site along Route 11. Box was arraigned before district judge Doug Brewer... then remanded to the Columbia County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.
If you plan to use Route 11 between Berwick and Bloomsburg Monday... you might want to consider an alternate route. PennDOT crews are expected to pick up where they left off last week... in trying to complete the sealing of cracks in one of the most heavily used roads in Columbia County. The agency's Rick Mason says the project is designed to cut down on the formation of potholes.... and to stretch... already thin... maintenance dollars.
Foster Twp. Fire
Foster Township firemen... near Hazleton... made quick work of a fire over the weekend. They were called to a home along Woodhaven Drive in the Hickory Hills sub – division... where they stopped a chimney fire in it's tracks. No one was at home when the blaze broke out. Cause of the fire is believed to be related to the home's heating system.
A Hazleton area man is jailed after he was charged with trying to kill his unborn child. Hazleton police say they arrested 22 – year old Daniel Delese of Jeddo at the start of the weekend after he threatened his pregnant girlfriend.... then allegedly punched her several times in the abdomen. Delese was arrested on a number of charges in connection with the case.
