PPL Outage Update
PPL Utilities continues to make power restoration progress in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, with 75 percent of affected customers now back in service. Utility officials said the goal remains to restore power to 80 to 85 percent of all affected customers across its system by 11 PM Friday night... and to have the lights back on for all — including the Lehigh Valley, parts of Bucks and Montgomery counties, the Poconos and northeast Pennsylvania — by 11 PM Sunday. As of late Friday afternoon.... 47 subscribers remain without power... mostly on a line north of I – 80. Only two subscribers in Montour County don't have any power. The Poconos and Lehigh County remain the biggest area to restore the power.
The folks who supply power to part of Luzerne County says they've restored service to all 17 – thousand customers left in the dark by Hurricane Sandy. UGI Electric says the juice was restored Thursday afternoon. PPL says it's taking care of its customers... of the 24.000 left in the dark by the storm... many have had the power restored with only 378 outages as of Friday morning.
So how did Columbia County make out during this weeks storm. If you're county spokesman John Thomas.... pretty well... thank you. During the height of the storm... the County's Emergency Management Agency worked around the clock to make sure there were no problems.
Autoneum / Corbett
We we're the first to tell you earlier this week... that through the efforts of Congressman Lou Barletta... the U-S Economic Development Administration has okayed a $15 – million grant for the design and construction of a flood wall around Autoneum and Windsor Foods on Bloomsburg's West Side. That's good news for the two companies who employ a combined 1,000 people. Speaking with reporters recently outside Autoneum... Governor Corbett says money for the project has been top of mind in Harrisburg. No word when the EDA will release the money, but it will be supplemented by state dollars... as well as contributions from Autoneum and Windsor Foods.
Police in the Elysburg area of Northumberland County have captured a man they were looking for most of Thursday afternoon. Authorities say Jason Cressinger of Berwick allegedly ran from a Ralpho Township police officer during a traffic stop. For several hours Thursday afternoon... cops converged in the 400 block of Route 54 looking for Cressinger. He was eventually found early Thursday evening inside a motorcycle shop... and taken into custody along with an unidentified woman.
Black Creek Township Fire
A state police fire marshall has been called in to determine the cause of a house fire in Black Creek Township... in Luzerne County. Firemen stayed on the scene nearly six hours at the Landis family home in the 1100 block of Cedar Head Road this week. It was involved in flames when firemen arrived. No one was hurt in that blaze in Black Creek Township.
The owners of 163 Luzerne County properties... damaged in the flooding of September 2011... should receive buyout offers early next year. Flood Protection Authority Executive Jim Brozena said offers will be made to the property owners... including those in Shickshinny. $14.3 - three million dollars will be earmarked for the buy outs. 75 % of the funding comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency... 22% from the state... and the remaining 3% from Luzerne County.
Former Penn State President Graham Spanier has been charged with several counts in the Jerry Sandusky child rape scandal at the university, including obstruction of justice, perjury, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failure to report allegations of child abuse. Additional charges were also files Thursday against former PSU Athletic Director Tim Curley and ex – Vice President Gary Schultz. The three men now faces the same five charges. Spanier, Curley and Schultz... as well as ex football coach Joe Paterno... are accused of covering up Sandusky's actions. Paterno died last January.
A man who started his towing business in Mifflinville is recovering after he was struck on the head after he was lured from his from his Lewisburg area home by a women who said she had a flat tire. Right now... East Buffalo Township police say they have no suspects in custody in the assault on Brian Bolus. It happened when arriving at the woman's car at the bottom of the Bolus driveway... where two men were waiting. Bolus was treated and released at Evangelical Hospital.
A retired Sunbury police officer is dead following a one car crash in West Buffalo Township in Union County Wednesday night. Authorities say 65 – year old William Hudson was west bound on Route 192... near Mifflinburg... when he lost control of his pick up truck... and slammed into a tree. Hudson owned and operated Pop Snyder's restaurant on Market Street in Sunbury. Trooper say he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.2 percent in September, up one-tenth of a percentage point from the August rate of 8.1 percent. Resident employment was up 23,000, and the number of unemployed residents was up 5,000.
Superstorm Sandy has had an effect on PennDOT drivers license offices. Agency Secretary Barry Schoch says PennDOT has authorized the extension of the expiration dates for Pennsylvania driver licenses... identification cars... and vehicle inspections and registrations. That extension is now November 15th for registrations... safety and emissions inspections. The same date has been given to folks with driver licenses and ID card set to expire between October 26th and November 15th.

Bloomsburg and Central Columbia ended the regular season by renewing their neighborhood rivalry Friday night at Redman Stadium on the BU campus. The game ended in a 34-12 Bloomsburg victory.
Berwick / Hazleton
Berwick exteneded their record to 9-1 after beating Hazleton 49-7 at Crispin Field on Friday night.
Danville defeated Selinsgrove 24-14 in a Heartland Conference Division I Championship... and Southern Columbia trounced Warrior Run 50-19. Saturday afternoon Columbia Montour Vo - Tech is at home against Pius X.
