Berwick police have arrested three juveniles... and have charged them with vandalizing Crispin Field over the weekend. Two of the juveniles are 16... and the third is 12... and all live in the Berwick area. As we told you earlier this week... a concession trailer belonging to the Berwick Youth Football League was trashed... as well as the press box. The trio didn't stop there... also allegedly ripped off and vandalized a near by restaurant and damaged a window at an auto parts store. All three are facing felony and misdemeanor charges.
It's been just over a week since voter registration closed for next month's general election... and Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Repasky is out with the numbers. Repasky says there are 16,747 registered Republicans... and 17,092 Democrats in Columbia County. Add in an estimated 59 – hundred independent or third party voters... and it come out to nearly 40 – thousand registered voters. With voting day here on November 6th... Mr. Repasky stressed poll workers will ask for identification... but none is needed since a state Commonwealth judge set aside the voter ID law.
Briar Creek Twp Wreck
Four people were sent to area hospitals late Wednesday afternoon following a two car crash in the 100 block of Kachinka Hollow Road in Briar Creek Township. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition.. 18 – year old Iris DiPasquale lost control of her car... hit a guardrail... and spun into the path of car driven by 26 – year old Joni Hummer. Two kids in the Hummer car were freed and taken to a local hospital. But Hummer was trapped behind the wheel... taking 45 minutes for her to be extracted by firemen. DePasquale had to be extracted as well from her badly damaged car. Both women were taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville by two Life – Flight helicopters for treatment.
Plans are currently underway to celebrate Columbia County's 200th anniversary next March. It happens the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd... so says Columbia County Commissioner David Kovach. He says it was back in 1813... that Columbia broke off from neighboring Northumberland County. On Saturday... March 23rd... Kovach says a huge parade takes place to celebrate our heritage. It begins at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot and ends at the Fairgrounds.
Child Labor Law
A bill to revamp employment rules for children... especially working in the entertainment industry is expected to be signed by Governor Corbett. State Senator John Gordner of Berwick who chairs the Senate's Labor and Industry committee says a lot of research went into the proposed law. It's the first time in 80 years that the child labor laws have been amended... and it follows some questionable practices by the producers of reality television shows.
A state lawmaker from the Hazleton area wants to teach young folks a lesson after a video surfaced questioning her behavior. Even though she believes the video is dirty politics the lawmaker still wants to get her message out. That state lawmaker is representative Tarah Toohil of Hazleton and the YouTube video shows her with what appears to be illegal drugs. Toohil telling our media partner NewsWatch 16... it is her in the video when she was a teen and now she wants people to learn from it.
Former State Senator Ray Musto has had more criminal charges filed against him. The 84 – year old Musto has been charged with accepting cash in exchange for influence in handing out contracts for construction projects. He already faces five corruption charges which surfaced in 2010... forcing the Luzerne County State Senator from office. Musto was to have gone on trial in April of 2011, but that didn't happen due to health problems... and he probably won't see the inside of a courtroom until sometime next year. He is currently free on bond.
Hazle Township Fire
Theres a follow up to that Hazle Township fire we told you about this week. The Township fire chief says the fire in an apartment building in the 1100 block of Harwood Road on Tuesday... was electrical in nature.... and started in a first floor apartment. The blaze gutted the building... leaving the people living in the three apartments to find housing elsewhere.
The unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team plays at Cheyney Saturday afternoon. Cheyney is the first true option team that Bloomsburg will face this season according to Huskies' coach Danny Hale. Bloomsburg at Cheyney kicks off Saturday at 1 O'clock. In Major League baseball.... in game three of the National League Championship series Wednesday.... it was the Saint Louis Cardinals downing the San Francisco Giants 3 to 1 following a three hour rain delay. The Cards now have a 2 to 1 lead in the NLCS. In the American League Championship Series was postponed last night due to the threat of rain. That means the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees square off against each other Thursday afternoon at 4:07. Detroit leads the series three games to none.
