Chilly Weather

It's going to be a chilly Friday night... into Saturday. The National Weather Service at State College says high pressure will build into the area Friday afternoon... and behind that... our first cold weather of the fall. The NWS issuing a Freeze Watch and a Frost Advisory for Friday night... into Saturday morning. Overnight temps will dip into the upper 20s... and the cold weather will do damage to vegetation and crops if they're not protected.

 

Gas to Power

It's been in the works the past couple of years... but finally the ribbon was cut on a project that takes the methane gas of rotting garbage... and turns into useable electricity... thanks to PPL. The power will run part of the Allenwood Correctional Complex near Montgomery. Most, if not all of Columbia County's trash goes to the Lycoming County landfill where it decomposes... but now it's a win – win situation... so says State Senator Gene Yaw. Senator Yaw... and PPL's Rick Klingensmith were at the ribbon cutting ceremonies Thursday... ushering in the latest project of it's type in a four state area.

 

Bloomsburg Zoning

The Bloomsburg Town Council has sent the issue of re – zoning to the Town's Planning Commission. What is involved is a section of land from Third to Pine Streets... boarded by East and Market Streets. The proposal would have rezoned the area from Commercial to Residential. During this week's council meeting developer Matt Zopetti called it a non – solution to a non – problem. After the planning commission takes a look at the pro's and con's of re-zoning... they'll give their recommendation to council... who will then hold a second public hearing.

 

Bloomsburg Assistant Manager

By the end of the month... Bloomsburg may have a new assistant town manager. Town Council offering Berwick Borough assistant manager Lauren Martz $44,500 a year... plus benefits... to jump ship. The offer was put to the 26 – year old Martz earlier this week. Administrator Bill Lowthart said Ms. Martz answered an ad in a local publication... and when interviewed... was the unanimous choice of town council. The offer was made... despite a petition of roughly two dozen residents who believe the town doesn't need an assistant manager.

 

Celebrity Artist Series

The Celebrity Artist Series kicks off on the Bloomsburg University Campus next month. Randall Presswood of the BU Preforming Arts Office... appearing on the Thursday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz.. said the opening performance is the National Circus of the People Republic of China.The performance is November 16th.

 

Vets Trust Fund

Legislation designed to create a state Veterans Trust Fund is on the move in Harrisburg. At a time when every dollar counts in Harrisburg, the Veterans Trust Fund would combine public and private efforts to allow the state to pay for enhanced veterans services. Speaking on the Senate floor, Lisa Baker of neighboring Luzerne County said the Trust Fund would combined public and private funding to generate additional dollars. The bill already cleared the Senate... and is now in the state house for consideration.

 

GMC / Wal-Mart

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville is one of six health care organizations from across the country selected by Wal-Mart to participate in the company’s Centers of Excellence program. As part of this the arrangement, GMC will be providing heart surgery services for Wal-Mart associates and their dependents. According to a Geisinger spokesman... Wal-Mart associates can receive specialized care with no out-of-pocket costs.

 

Luzerne County Council

Luzerne County Council will hear from manager Robert Lawton on Monday when he delivers his proposed 2013 county budget. It's not known how much the budget is right now... but it's expected to hover around the $122.7 - million dollar mark... in essence what the county is currently working with. It calls for no tax increase... and some Luzerne County employees could face layoffs. The county council has until mid – December to adopt the plan.

 

NRC / PPL

There will be a public hearing Tuesday between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staffers and folks from the PPL Steam Electric System north of Berwick in Luzerne County. It will be an opportunity for residents to ask the NRC about the performance of the 30 – year old plant in Salem Township. That meeting will be held at 5 O'clock... at the Susquehanna Energy Information Center on Route 11 near the plant.

 

Luzerne Computer Upgrade

Luzerne County says it will spent nearly three – quarter of a million dollars to upgrade it's computer system over a five year period of time. Under the plan... servers will be purchased for the County's new financial system.... replacing aging servers elsewhere... and the replacement of an estimated 1 – thousand desktop computers.

 

Sandusky Pension

The Pennsylvania public employee retirement system says Jerry Sandusky will get to keep more than $900,000 in state pension payments he received after his 1999 retirement from Penn State University. A spokesman for the State Employees' Retirement System said Thursday it won't seek repayment of the money Sandusky received from 1999 to September 2012 because the state's forfeiture law does not authorize SERS to go after money paid before the date of a plea or conviction. However, the agency notified Sandusky he will no longer receive his $59,000 annual pension following his conviction and sentence in the child sexual abuse scandal. Sandusky was sentenced this week to at least 30 years in prison for sexually molesting 10 boys.

HS Football

It's the Panthers' homecoming this weekend! In our Game of the Week Bloomsburg hosted unbeaten neighbors Southern Columbia. Southern retained their standing with a 32-20 win over Bloom. In Bulldogs action on 103.5, Berwick soundly beat Williamsport 54-14. In other local games Friday night, Danville beat Montoursville 21-0, and Central Columbia beat Central Mountain 14-6.
