Freeze Watch

We could be in for our first freeze of fall this weekend. The National Weather Service in State College issuing a Freeze Watch for Columbia and Montour County's for late Friday night... into Saturday morning. And meteorologists say it could turn into a hard freeze. It's all due to high pressure which will build into the area Thursday. The NWS says temps will hover the in the upper 20's to lower 30's... and that could mean damage to unprotected and sensitive plants and crops.


Flood Protection

They're trying to save a thousand Bloomsburg – based jobs... Congressman Lou Barletta... as well as senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey... trying to get $15 – million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for flood protection. The money earmarked for building a flood wall around Autoneum and Windsor Foods... in order to protect them during times of flooding. Columbia County Commissioner David Kovach says the thousand jobs equates to a $30 – million payroll.


Coin Thefts

Two people are jailed... and two juveniles are in the custody of their families after they were arrested for allegedly breaking into a coin shop this week... then trying to sell the items to a second shop. Bloomsburg Police telling our media partner NewsWatch 16... 25 – year old Ryan Lee and 18 – year old Justin Lindsay... as well as two juveniles were busted for breaking into Bob's Coin Shop at East and Main Streets earlier this week. However, they tried to sell their goods Wednesday morning at Bloom Gold and Coin at 6th and East Streets. The owner became suspicious and called police. Lindsay was arraigned Wednesday afternoon... and cops didn't have to go far to find Lee. He's in the Columbia County Prison on an unrelated charge.


Rural Homeless

We've all seen the homeless in big cities... but the issue is making it's way to rural areas such as Columbia and Montour Counties. That was the basis of a forum on Wednesday at Bloomsburg University by the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania. Steve Berg of the National Alliance to End Homelessness says help for those folks out on the street starts locally. Berg says that involves working with non – profit groups... who in turn work with landlords in the community.... adding getting folks back in housing is important so they can get their lives back on track.


BU Homecoming

Everyone loves a parade.... and if you're in Bloomsburg Saturday morning you can catch the combined Bloomsburg University – Bloomsburg High School homecoming parade. The University's Jimmy Gilliland says the event steps off at 11 O'clock. Police will have alternate routes for traffic. The parade to be followed by the BU football game as the Huskies take on East Stroudsburg... a match up you can hear on the WHLM Stations.


Montour Arsonists

An Ohio insurance company is suing two volunteer firefighters for torching a barn on Potts Grove Road... in Montour County... earlier this year. The Celina Mutual Insurance Company has brought a suit against 35 - year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg... and 19 – year old Zane Snyder of Milton. Already the pair have pleaded guilty to torching the barn... as well as two homes and a field. Both remain in the Montour County jail pending sentencing.


Luzerne County Manager

The Luzerne County manager doesn't plan to vote in November... or anytime after that. Records show Manager Robert Lawton didn't register to vote by the end of business on Tuesday. Lawton says he wants to stay out of Luzerne County's political process... making his decisions non – political.


Robert Mellow

Former state Senate Democratic leader... Robert Mellow... is now scheduled to be sentenced November 30th. If you recall... the 70 – year old Mellow pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspire to use Senate staff members in order to do political campaign work.... as will as conspiring to file false tax returns.


Wilkes - Barre Furloughs

An estimated 290 people employed by the City of Wilkes – Barre may have a rough holiday season. They're being asked to take a voluntary furlough starting next week... through the end of the year. Although city workers won't be paid... they will still be covered by health insurance. The move is designed to bridge a looming budget gap in Wilkes – Barre.

BU Football

The unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team will have to deal with a very talented young quarterback when the Huskies play East Stroudsburg in Saturday's homecoming game. In a big upset of West Chester last Saturday, Warriors' freshman Matt Soltes completed a school record 81% of his passes. Huskies coach Danny Hale calls Soltes scary. East Stroudsburg at Bloomsburg will kick off Saturday at 3:30. Our coverage begins at 1:30 with the Husky Tailgate Show on the WHLM Stations.



In the NFL tonight.... the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Titans in Tennessee.



In the major league baseball playoffs yesterday, in the national league... the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals 8 to nothing. The Cardinals lead the best of five series two games to one. The San Francisco Giants beat Cincinnati 8-3. That series is tied at two games each.


In the American League, it was the New York Yankees getting by the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 2. New York now leads the series two games to one.
