Could we see flood protection on Bloomsburg's West Side anytime soon for two of Columbia County's largest businesses? Congressman Lou Barletta... U-S Senator's Bob Casey and Pat Toomey are working to get a $15 – million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration... aimed at a flood protection project on the town's west side. According to Barletta's office... the proposed project would design and construct a flood wall around Autoneum and Windsor Foods... saving an estimated 1,000 jobs. Both manufacturers flood when the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek overflow their banks.
There will be no “get out of jail free” card for at least the next thirty years for former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. He'll be spending the next thirty to sixty years in prison on his convection of molesting ten young boys over a 15 – year period of time. Sandusky's attorney Joe Amendola said he believes there was a rush to investigate his client... because many wanted to knock down the football program... but added no one imagined it would explode the way it did. For now... Sandusky is being held in the Centre County jail... until a judge decides a state facility where he'll serve his sentence. Amendola says he'll appeal the conviction and the sentence.
Bloomsburg Drug Bust
An Elysburg woman is in the Columbia County Prison after she was busted on drug charges by Bloomsburg Police. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition 26 – year old Courtney Hollingshed was arrested after allegedly shooting up with heroin in the women's rest room at Dunkin' Donuts on Route 11 Tuesday morning. A search of Hollingshed revealed packets of the drug... and a syringe. She was arraigned and hustled off to the prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
BU / Homecoming
The Bloomsburg University campus is gearing up for this week's homecoming... featuring a parade through town... and a football game with East Stroudsburg. B-U President Dr. David Soltz... appearing on the Tuesday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... says the grand marshal for this year's parade is Chang Shub Roh, a sociology professor emeritus. The parade gets underway at 11 O'clock Saturday morning... following by the BU Huskies football game at 3:30... and will be heard on the WHLM Stations.
A Berwick area man is reported in serious condition... after his tractor rolled over on him Tuesday while mowing grass in Briar Creek Township. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... 68 – year old Leo Long was Life Flighted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville following the afternoon accident. Long was discovered on the ground by his 66 – year old wife... Gail. He sustained cuts and bruises... as well as a broken leg.
The Central Columbia School District continues it's quest to raise $1.5 - million for a new athletic and wellness center. Superintendent Harry Mathias telling WHLM News on Tuesday they've passed the $800,000 mark. The complex is to be constructed on school grounds... with the first phase to include a six lane, all – weather track to be used by the school... as well as the community. Plans also call for the installation of an artificial surface for the football field... and a lighted baseball diamond for use day and night.
A state police fire marshal has ruled that a blaze in a vacant and condemned building in Hazleton is arson. The fire struck the building in the 100 block of North Wyoming Street earlier in the week. Investigators didn't say what sparked the blaze. If you have information dealing with the fire... give State Police at the Hazleton Barracks a call.
The Freeland Municipal Authority has a big project on it's plate. Authority members says it plans to replace a 40 – year old plus main to the new Wyoming Street Pumping Station next spring. The project calls for installing a 10 inch line... eliminating the current eight inch line running to the station. Cost of the project is pegged at $1.3 - million.
Hazleton Stick Up
Hazleton police are still looking for two robbers who held up a Pantry Quick along East Diamond Avenue late Monday night. Police say the pair strolled into the store... threatened the clerk with a knife... and made off with some cash. If you have information about the robbery... call Hazleton Police.
An Ohio insurance company is suing two volunteer firefighters for torching a barn on Potts Grove Road earlier this year. The Celina Mutual Insurance Company has brought a suit against 35 - year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg... and 19 – year old Zane Snyer of Milton. The pair have already pleaded guilty to torching the barn... as well as two homes and a field. Both remain in jailed in Montour County pending sentencing.
The Bloomsburg High School football team will take a five game winning streak into their homecoming game against unbeaten Southern Columbia Friday night at Panther Stadium. Southern Columbia coach Jim Roth thinks his team will be facing a great passing attack. Friday night's Southern Columbia at Bloomsburg game is our game of the week.
