Sandusky Sentenced

Sentencing day for former assistant Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky. A sentence of 30 to 60 years in prison stemming from his conviction of last June of molesting at least ten boys over a 15 – year period. During the proceedings.... Sandusky read his 15 – minute impact statement... his voice cracked as he spoke of missing his loved ones. Under Pennsylvania law, Sandusky cannot be released on parole before the minimum term is up. No word where he'll spend his sentence, but there is speculation that it may be at Laurel Highlands in Somerset County... a facility for elderly male inmates.

 

Bloomsburg Assistant Manager

Bloomsburg town government may have a new assistant manager soon. The town council Monday night offering a contract to Berwick's assistant borough manager Lauren Martz... with a starting salary of $44,500 a year... plus a benefits package. If she accepts... Martz will assist current manager Bill Lowthert in running the town. The contract was offered to Ms. Martz and approved despite the reading of a petition containing the names of at 32 residents and business owners who don't believe an assistant manager is needed. No word if she'll accept the salary and benefit package proposed.... or if she does... when she would start.

 

Danville Fire

Investigators say a malfunctioning furnace is the cause of an early Monday morning fire which extensively damaged a town house on Meadow Lane in Danville. Ken Strausser of the Friendship Fire Company said they sounded a second alarm after arriving on the scene. They got help from Bloomsburg and Espy. Strausser says Mike Sine and his son escaped safely... and were assisted by the American Red Cross.

 

Voting Registration Deadline

With the deadline Tuesday for folks to register to vote... Columbia County's Chief Registrar Matt Repasky says it's time for college age students and young adults to step up to the plate and get involved in the political process. If you haven't registered to vote for the November election... the deadline to do so at the Columbia County Courthouse Annex in Bloomsburg is 5 O'clock Tuesday afternoon.

 

Hazleton Vandalism

Hazleton Police want to know who vandalized a statute of Christopher Columbus... sitting on a pedestal in Memorial Park. The damage was discovered on Monday... which coincidentally... we celebrated as Columbus Day. The graffiti was washed off... but a gooey substance was left behind. If you have information dealing with the vandalism... call Hazleton Police.

 

Hazleton Fire

Fire officials in Hazleton say a fire which broke out in a vacant building on Wyoming Street was not accidental. The blaze broke out Monday afternoon at 100 and 104 North Wyoming Street. It's believed the fire started in the basement. Now... a state police fire marshal has been called in to determine how that fire started in Hazleton.

 

Jill Biden

The wife of Vice President Joe Biden spent some time in Hazleton on Monday. Jill Biden stopped by the the Obama for America campaign headquarters to rally supporters. Her stop in Hazleton followed a brief visit to Scranton. Ms. Biden will continue her campaign swing through the state Tuesday with scheduled stops in Reading... Lancaster and Philadelphia.

 

Gas Prices

The price of a gallon of self – serve, unleaded regular gasoline remains somewhat steady. The Triple – A Fuel Gauge report shows that gas across northeastern Pennsylvania is averaging $3.91 – a gallon... down a penny from the weekend, but it's up five cents a gallon from a week ago. However, if you look hard enough... you'll find gas a little lower at some gas station convenience stores.

 

PennDOT Project

PennDOT... through a contractor will begin a short – term project Tuesday. It's designed to repair the embankment of Interstate – 80... westbound which abuts Fishing Creek... just west of the Lightstreet interchange. The construction company doing the work will close the westbound driving lane between mile marker 233 and 231.. removing a short section of guardrail... placing a rock entrance along the shoulder to access the eroded stream bank. The job should be wrapped up by late Tuesday afternoon.

BU Football

The unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team has moved up to 6th in the nation in this week's American Football Coaches Association poll. The Huskies play East Stroudsburg Saturday in the annual homecoming game which kicks off at 3:30. Three other PSAC teams are in the poll... California is 15th, unbeaten Shippensburg is 16th, and IUP is ranked 22nd.

 

NFL Monday

In Monday night football the Houston Texans defeated the New York Jets 23 to 17.

 

MLB

In major league baseball Monday... in a National League Division Series game... the Saint Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 12 to 4. That best of five series is tied at one game each. In the American League Playoffs Monday night the Baltimore Orioles getting by the New York Yankees 3 to 2... to even the best-of-five set.
