Bloomsburg Assistant Town Manager

Bloomsburg Town Government may have a new assistant manager soon. The town council Monday night offering a contract to Berwick's assistant borough manager Lauren Martz... with a starting salary of $44,500 a year... plus a benefits package. If she accepts... Martz will assist current manager Bill Lowthert in running the town. The contract was offered to Ms. Martz and approved despite the reading of a petition containing the names of at 32 residents and business owners who don't believe an assistant manager is needed. No word if she'll accept the salary and benefit package proposed.... or when she would start.

 

Danville Fire Update

A malfunctioning furnace is the apparent cause of a fire which extensively damaged a town house on Meadow Lane in Danville early Monday morning. That word from incident commander Ken Strausser... on the scene moments after the alarm sounded. Strauser says the blaze got more difficult to fight at time went on due to ducting throughout the house... used to deliver heat to the structure. Less than 25 – minutes after arriving on the scene, Strausser said Bloomsburg's ladder truck... and Espy's Rapid Intervention Team were called as mutual aid. Strausser said the townhouse belonging to Mike Fine and was extensively damaged.

 

 Christopher Columbus

It was a weekend to celebrate the Columbus Day holiday. It happened Sunday in Berwick at the Maria Assunta on Monroe Street. The Berwick High School band... veterans... politicians and emergency vehicles were in the line of march. Chris DiMattio.. the past national president of UNICO... the largest Italian – American service organization... said Christopher Columbus was a pretty brave explorer... when discovering the new world.

 

Fine Arts Festival

There were a lot of tourists in Columbia County this weekend... not only at the Covered Bridge Festival at Knoebels Amusement Resort... but Saturday at the Twin Covered Bridges Fine Arts Festival in Forks. Columbia County Commissioner Chris Young said the covered bridges scattered across the county does drive tourism. Meantime... the Covered Bridges Festival at Knoebels drew thousands of people over its four-day run to visit with an estimated 350 artisans who sold their crafts throughout the resort.

 

Jill Biden

The wife of Vice – President Joe Biden will spend some time in Luzerne County Monday as she campaigns for her husband and Barack Obama. According to the Obama – Biden campaign.... Jill Biden will drop by the the Democratic field office in Hazleton... in the 200 block of West Broad Street... at mid – afternoon. She will also visit reelection headquarters in Harrisburg and Allentown... before moving on to Reading and Lancaster on Tuesday.

 

Salem Crash

A pick up truck went up in flames early Sunday morning after it ran off Route 11 near Beach Haven in Salem Township. The name of the person driving the vehicle has not been released by police...but life flight was called to the scene and at least one person was flown to Geisinger in Danville for treatment.

 

Mocanaqua Fire

A State Police fire marshal has been called in to figure out what started a blaze in a vacant house in Mocanaqua. The fire was discovered late Saturday afternoon... and before it was distinguished eight area fire departments were called in... including a unit from Berwick. One fireman was slightly injured.

 

PennDOT

PennDOT... through a contractor will begin a short – term project on Tuesday... designed to repair the embankment of Interstate – 80... westbound abutting Fishing Creek... just west of the Lightstreet interchange. Kruger Construction will close the westbound driving lane between mile marker 233 and 231.. removing a short section of guardrail... placing a rock entrance along the shoulder to access the eroded stream bank. It's a day long job... but the shoulder will be closed through next month.

 

Sandusky Sentence

Former assistant Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky is expected to be sentenced Tuesday in Centre County Count in Bellefonte... for his conviction on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. The sentencing comes four months after a jury found him guilty. Since his conviction... Sandusky has spent his time... segregated... in the Centre County Correctional Facility. It's expected the 68 – year old Sandusky will serve the remainder of his life behind bars... able to watch Penn State football on television... and work a 30 – hour week to make money... and be under the watchful eyes of prison guards.

Bloomsburg University

The Bloomsburg University football team is still unbeaten. The Huskies won easily 38-14 Saturday at Millersville. It figures to be tougher this Saturday when they play East Stroudsburg in the homecoming game at Redman Stadium. East Stroudsburg upset West Chester on Saturday 35-28.

 

NFL

In the NFL Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 16-14.... and the New York Giants got past the Cleveland Browns 41-27.

 

Baseball

In the major league baseball playoffs, it was the Detroit Tigers getting by the Oakland A's 5 to 4.. the Washington National defeating the Saint Louis Cardinals 3-2. The New York Yankees got by the Baltimore Orioles 7 to 2 and the Cincinnati Reds blanked the San Francisco Giants 9 to nothing.
