You could see the smoke for miles.... and the flames were intense... that as a large barn caught fire on Sweppenheiser Drive in South Centre Township. Now... there's nothing left of the barn... which had been at 5005 Sweppenheiser for generations... across the street from the Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech School. Lime Ridge Fire Chief Scott Fedder telling WHLM News the owner of the barn walked away to do some mowing... and when he came back... the strucutre was on fire. Fedder says he believes the fire is electrical in nature. The barn packed full of hay and straw. The horses kept inside the structure were led to safety. Bloomsburg firemen thought they had a house fire on their hands when they were dispatched to the 700 block of Catherine Street Sunday night. However, Fire Chief Bob Rupp said the emergency wasn't as bad as first thought... just a circuit breaker box which caught fire and burned itself out. The owner of the two story, half – double half home was called about the incident. An electrician expected to make repairs Monday.
The flooding of last September caused problems for United Water... the utility that supplies drinking water to Bloomsburg and surrounding areas. Not only did the town run out of water... hours into the flood event... but water lines on the west side were damaged. But... that's all been taken care of over the past year... so says the utility's Bob Manbeck. Also... put into service recently... was 2,000 feet of a new 16 inch in diameter transmission line... providing the west side with more... and consistent water pressure. The old transmission line was buried under Fishing Creek and was washed away during the flood.
What's the closing days of the Bloomsburg Fair without a dairy princes or two at the cattle barn. That's where we found Columbia – Luzerne County Dairy Princess Kate Dent of Briar Creek Township. Ms. Dent promotes dairy products in the two county area throughout the year. Ms. Dent and her court spent a couple of hours around the livestock area... having pictures taken for the 2013 Columbia County bicentennial calendar which will be distributed next year.
The owners of Stony Brook Circle in Orangeville have entered a consent degree with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. EPA have signed a $1.3 – million consent decree with GPS Management... Frank Perano and related management companies. It covers drinking and waste water issues at 73 mobile home parks... 70 of which are in Pennsylvania. The State EPA says the problem at Stony Brook Circle deals with the drinking water. The DEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency say inspectors discovered violations at the mobile home parks during five consecutive years.
The price of a gallon of self – serve, unleaded regular gas is hovering in the mid $3.80 range. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report out this morning shows that right now... across northeastern Pennsylvania... gas is averaging $3.86 a gallon... up a penny from Sunday... but the same price it was last week at this time. Overall... gas is up an average of 8 cents a gallon as compared to a month ago.
Work continues this week on the new bridges which carry Interstate 80 over the Susquehanna River between the Lime Ridge / Berwick and Mifflinville interchanges. PennDOT's Rick Mason says starting Tuesday... and lasting through Wednesday... the eastbound right lane will be closed from 7 AM until 5 PM... in order to remove temporary concrete barriers and paint new traffic lines. This will open the acceleration lane for the eastbound on – ramp at Lime Ridge... eliminating the stop sign now in place.
A detour remains in effect for Monday morning commute in neighboring Sullivan County. Route 87 near Forksville was shut down on Sunday due to a rock slide which covered the road. A detour has been established... however some trucks used in the Marcellus shale fields are being allowed through the area. PennDOT says the road is expected to be open to traffic late today... or sometime tomorrow.
Hazleton police say they're investigating a stabbing which occurred over the weekend at a North Laurel Street parking lot... near Green Street. Police aren't saying much about the incident... only saying that the unidentified man received a superficial wound.
Avoca ATC Tower
If you're flying out of the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton Airport.... your plane will be guided through the skies by air traffic controllers in a state of the art control tower. The ribbon cutting was held at the start of the weekend officially bringing the $20 – million tower on line. The tower it replaced had been in operation since 1952.
Junior running back Franklyn Quiteh rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bloomsburg University football team to a 43-24 win over Gannon on Saturday as the Huskies remained unbeaten. Quiteh became the third player in school history to rush for over 4000 career yards. The win came with a big cost- wide receiver Kyle Fisher suffered a severe shoulder injury which will sideline him indefinitely. The Huskies play at Millersvile next Saturday afternoon.
The Philadelphia Eagles just getting by the New York Giants Sunday night... 19 to 17. Sunday afternoon... the San Francisco 49er's blanked the New York Jets 34 to nothing.
Cole Hamels kept delivering for the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. He struck out eight while allowing five hits to lead the Phillies to a 4 to one victory over the Miami Marlins. The Phillies wrap up the season starting with their final series with the Washington National Monday night.
