Hit & Run Arrest
An 18 – year old Berwick man is in the Columbia County Prison on a quarter – million dollars bond after he was charged with hitting and killing a bicyclist on Ridge Road over the weekend. Our media partner NewsWatch 16 is reporting Joseph Rish allegedly struck 50 – year old Robert Mohr early Sunday morning with a borrowed SUV. Rish telling police he didn't stop because he believed he hit a deer... and he had been drinking and has a suspended drivers license. Mohr was on his way home to Brookside Village after working the third shift at a Lightstreet restaurant when he was hit. He later died at Geisinger Medical Center.
It's budget preparation time for Columbia County... as well as its municipalities. And there is expected to be a lingering impact from the flood of the fall of 2011. Some flooded properties are being restored... but County Commissioner David Kovach says those homes slated for buyouts... leave a big question mark. Meantime... Bloomsburg Town Council meets late Wednesday afternoon to start their budget preparation for 2013. That meeting begins at 5:30 in council chambers.
With only days remaining until the 157th edition of the Bloomsburg Fair opens... concessionaires... folks from Reithoffer Shows... and others are setting up shop for the exposition's eight day run. Power saws were busy... and hammers nailing boards together all in anticipation of the opening. Also strolling the grounds Monday was fair director Jim Burrows... the association's treasure... watching the preparations. The Fair has a preview day this Friday.... with the event officially getting underway Saturday.
Schools from the Pennsylvania University System will gather at Bloomsburg this weekend for the first of it's kind media summit. Hundreds of students will be in town for the event. BU Senior Paul Rosa says the sessions are aimed at underclassmen still trying to figure what major to take. Rosa says a number of panelists will be on hand for the two – day event.... including WBRE – TV's Andy Mahalshick who speaks Saturday morning at 10 O'clock at Carver Hall.
Traffic was backed up for eight miles Monday afternoon following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 80 in Nescopeck Township. Authorities say the unidentified biker died when he lost control and apparently hit a guardrail near Mile Marker 249... between the Conyngham and Mifflinville interchanges... near the Village of Tank. The investigation continues... and police say no one else was involved in the accident.
Hazleton City Council is expected to revisit a rental registration proposal when they meet on Wednesday. The big changes... the registration to include places such as day care and rehabilitation centers... halfway houses and residential care facilities. The proposal also includes an annual fee for a license... as well as an inspection fee. The measure is designed to cover all properties in Hazleton and to clean up dilapidated homes.
Convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky will be sentenced on October 9th. The former assistant Penn State football coach was convicted in June of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving young boys. Some of the attacks taking place in the teams locker room. It's believed Sandusky will spend the rest of his life in prison.
After defeating Kutztown on Saturday for their third straight win, the Bloomsburg University football team has moved up to 11th in the nation in this week's American Football Coaches Association Poll. Two other PSAC teams are in the poll- California is 6th and IUP is 14th. Bloomsburg plays at LIU Post Saturday afternoon while IUP plays at California.

In a high school football game played last night in Selinsgrove, it was Selinsgrove over Shikellamy 37 to nothing.
In the NFL last night, it was the Atlanta Falcons over the Denver Broncos 27 to 21.
The Philadelphia Phillies opened a three game series with the New York Mets last night in dominating fashion. Cliff Lee outlasting Mets knuckleballer R-A Dickey to get a 3 to 1 win.
