It was a day of remembrance in Berwick on Tuesday... for the victims of the 9/11 terrorists attacks on America back in 2001. AMVETS Honor Guard Bugler Gary O'Neal visited four locations in Berwick and Nescopeck... playing taps at the same minute hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center... the Pentagon and a field in Somerset County... in Western PA. O'Neal highlighting the remembrance at the Ranger Hose and Reliance Fire Companies in Berwick... the Nescopeck VFW... as well as in front of the borough's Jackson Mansion on Market Street.
In Nanticoke... in Luzerne County... a ceremony to remember what happened on September 11th, 2001 on the campus of Luzerne County Community College. Administrators.... students as well as state senator John Yudichak were there to remember. The school has a memorial to those who died in the terrorist attacks on America... the center piece a portion of one of the World Trade Center Buildings.
The investigation continues into the apparent accidental death of a Wapwallopen man. 43 – year old Mark Cragle died early Monday night when his pick – up truck either fell or rolled over him while he was under it. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition he was waiting for two friends in a field adjacent to the Susquehanna River in Beach Haven when he was crushed. Authorities are now awaiting the results of a autopsy preformed Tuesday in Wilkes – Barre.
If you've been out and about in the area the past day or so... have you noticed the price of gas ?? It is now spiking upward at a pretty good clip. Some convenience stores gas stations are now selling self – serve, unleaded regular at $3.99 a gallon. A jump across the $4.00 a gallon barrier could be possible this week... as new gas deliveries are made just in time for the weekend. Experts say dwindling oil inventory following Hurricane Issac is pushing up prices.
Dozens of anti – heroin rallies are being held around the nation on Saturday... including one scheduled for Berwick's Jackson Mansion. Vicky Lowery's family has seen the self - destruction of the drug firsthand.... so she is organizing the event. Lowery says not only is Saturday's event looking at the dangers of heroin... but it is also a day of recovery. The rally begins at 1 O'clock on the lawn of the Jackson Mansion on Market Street in Berwick.
Bloomsburg Fair Tickets
With the Bloomsburg Fair opening in less than two weeks.... tickets to the night shows are becoming the hottest attraction in town. That word from Carey Howell.... the superintendent of the grandstand. And despite speculation on the street... Howell said the Allen Jackson show for Saturday night, the 29th, is not sold out... with plenty of good seats still available.
Hazle Township Signs
Supervisors in Hazle Township have decided to wait an additional 30 days before adopting a new sign ordinance. The proposal calls for a ten dollar fee for each sign... with the signs separated by 150 feet for a maximum of 30 days. Business owners say it's a prohibitive expense... and could cause them to go out of business.
Hazleton Police are investigating a fight which broke out as the downtown street fair... known as Fun Fest was coming to an end. Police getting a call saying some teenagers were fighting at Pine and Oak Streets. When they arrived they only found a 17 – year old boy from Hazle Township... but apparently the ruckus was caused by some teenage girls fighting. As of yet... no charges have been filed.
A Unityville man who was thrown from a vehicle he was riding in a week ago in Sullivan County... has died from his injuries. 24-year-old Jesse Richart was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Luke Higley of New Albany. The accident happened on Route 487 in Cherry Township. Reichart was ejected from the vehicle when it rolled over. Higley faces aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI... and could face other charges filed by State Police.
After last Saturday's impressive 30-14 win over Edinboro, the Bloomsburg University football team has moved up to 12th in the nation in the American Football Coaches Association Poll. This Saturday at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium, the Huskies take on another nationally ranked team- Kutztown.
The defending PSAC Champion Golden Bears are ranked 21st. Kutztown is coming off a 48 to 45 loss to 6th ranked California. Saturday will be the Eastern Division opener for both the Huskies and Golden Bears. Last season Kutztown crushed the Huskies 52-14.
Jimmy Rollins homered and drove in three runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-7 win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday. Roy Halladay allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out six over 6 1/3 innings to earn his fourth win in five starts. The Phils and the Marlins meet each other Wednesday in an afternoon matinee at Citizens Bank Park.
