Tractor Trailer Snags Wires

An unusual sight at the top of North Street in Bloomsburg Thursday night.... at First Street... behind the Bloomsburg Health Care Center. An out - of - state tractor – trailer stuck with no where to go. Bloomsburg Police officer Jim Cromley telling WHLM News... when the driver discovered he couldn't turn left.... he tried to back down the street. That's when he snagged a power line crossing North Street... breaking a utility poll in the process.... bringing them down into the street. No one lost power. Police were assisted by the Bloomsburg Fire Department.

 

Cawley Tours Fairgrounds

Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Jim Cawley spent a couple of hours on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Thursday... taking a look at the progress made over the past year following the floods of September. Cawley was at the fairgrounds weeks following the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee... and says Thursday's tour is the definition of Pennsylvania resilience. The flood caused a million dollars worth of damage... and try as they might to get the 2011 show off the ground... the fair association board had to cancel the event. But, the problems have been swept away... with this year's Fair now scheduled to get underway September 22nd.

 

AVP Future

The Wilkes – Barre / Scranton International Airport in Avoca could be one of a hundred airports around the country to loose their air traffic control facilities early next year.... that could force airlines to go elsewhere. ATC is used to clear planes to land and take off. The ATC elimination is mandated under automatic federal spending cuts that will take effect January 2nd. The elimination of service is aimed at airports which have less than 750,000 passengers arriving and departing. The list of airports scheduled to have their services eliminated is contained in a Center for American Progress study. Other PA airports in danger of losing ATC service are Allentown, Harrisburg and Erie.

 

Evansville Death

Funeral services were held Wednesday for a 27 – year old Marshall's Creek man who died last weekend at the Evansville Raceway in Briar Creek Township... near Berwick. The details are just surfacing. Marc Rudolph died when the ATV he was riding landed on it's nose Saturday night. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... Rudolph died when he landed face – first in the dirt. Deputy Columbia County Coroner Ron Taylor telling the paper he died instantly.

 

Railroad Crossing

Railroad Street in Bloomsburg... at 8th Street... remains closed as crews continue to update the crossing. The crossing is used by Northumberland – based North Shore Railroad... and is being replaced by a crew from Finkbeiner and Associates of Altoona. That crew... is taking out the old crossing and rails... and replacing it with a crossing that's more up to date. Railroad Street is expected to be re-opened by Monday.

 

Backpack Program

The Berwick Area United Way continues it's “Stuff the Bus” campaign... collecting back to school items to be placed in backpacks... to be given to students in Berwick who who qualify. The United Way's Ginny Crake says it's simple to participate... just purchase back to school supplies and drop them off in barrels at area businesses. Drop off barrels are located at the Berwick Area United way... the Faith United Lutheran Church... Fuel Fitness and the Berwick YMCA. The first day of school in Berwick is August 22nd.

 

Hazleton Luring

West Hazleton Police are searching for a man who attempted to lure a 10 – year old boy into his car earlier this week. Police say the man approached the child on Fourth Street... offering him a sticker... but the child didn't accept it. Officers say the car they're looking for is green... with the letter “V” on the front.

 

Man Overcome

A Conyngham Borough Authority worker was treated at a Hazleton hospital after he was overcome by chlorine fumes Wednesday morning. An authority spokesman says the employee opened the door of a well on Banks Avenue... and immediately felt the effects of the chemical. An investigation determined that up to 30 – gallons of Chlorine leaked from a small hole into a well hose. No one living near the well was ever in danger.

 

Mission Foods

Mission Foods in the Crestwood Industrial Park... in Luzerne County... is expanding it's operations. The company has now leased a 40,000 square foot building... which will be linked to a 110,000 square foot building on Elmwood Road. The firm is already operating out of a 136,000 square foot facility for it's tortilla production. The new space will allow for the overflow... and keep an estimated 400 employees space to work.

 

Burglary Investigation

State Police in Laporte... in neighboring Sullivan County... are looking for the persons responsible for a home burglary that occurred over the weekend. Investigators tell us that someone arrived at the home of Margaret Brass on Linwood Avenue in Eagles Mere sometime over the weekend... cut a screen on the back porch to unlock the door. Once inside... the thieves made off with a half dozen bottles of liquor. If you have information about the burglary... call state police at Laporte.

 

Millard / Forum

State Representative David Millard of Millville says he plans to sponsor a Senior Caregiver Support Forum next month. It's an effort to ensure local residents acting as caregiver are up to speed on all resources available to them. The forum will be held Thursday, September 13th at the Berwick Hospital on East 16th Street beginning at 10 AM. Please call any of Representative Millard's office to register.

 

Shooting Probe

The Northumberland County District Attorney is not sure whether charges of neglect will be filed against the parents of an 8 – year - old boy who accidentally shot himself over the weekend in Point Township. Police say the boy removed a weapon from a gun cabinet his parent's home... took it outdoors... and it discharged. Police say the child remains in serious but stable condition at Geisinger Medical Center.

The Bloomsburg University football team begins preseason drills Thursday afternoon. The Huskies will begin to prepare for the 2012 season which kicks off Friday night, August 31st when they take on Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Dan Uggla's three-run double in the seventh inning helped the Atlanta Braves take a 12-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of a three-game set Wednesday night. Atlanta's Tim Hudson didn't get out of the fifth as he was pounded for six runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The Phillies have Thursday off... as they get ready for a weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show Friday at 6:30... with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.
