Water service to Bloomsburg was restored late Tuesday afternoon... hours after a construction crew punched through a 12 – inch water main serving the the downtown area. Pressure was reduced to other parts of United Water's System. The utility's Bob Manbeck said the problem began with a crew was installing a new 16 – inch transmission line... snagging the adjacent pipe. Manbeck says despite the loss of pressure for a couple of hours.... no “boil water advisory” has been issued for subscribers of United Water.
A preliminary hearing is set for August 15th for a Berwick woman accused of embezzling an estimated $24,000 from the accounts of guests at the Berwick Retirement Village. 37 – year old Sarah Loui Pineda – Scott allegedly took the money. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition the woman opened credit card accounts... and used the money to cover the payments. She was arraigned Tuesday in front of Judge Richard Knecht... and was released without posting bond.
National Night Out
You couldn't have wanted a more perfect night as law enforcement across the region observed National Night Out at the Bloomsburg Town Pool. Kids and their parents got an opportunity to talk to officers who patrol the streets. Bloomsburg police officer Ken Auchter said the guys and gals in blue were getting out the crime prevention message. Also on hand Tuesday night were Bloomsburg volunteer firemen... as well as Pennsylvania State Police and the SWAT team.
Shickshinny Bounces Back
Work is underway at bringing a new supermarket to Shickshinny... in Luzerne County. Renovation work continues at the former Five Mountain Market... which never returned following the Lee Flood last September. Now... a Thomas' Family Market will take its space. Fred Lombardo... who is co - owner of the shopping center where Thomas' will move into says... Shickshinny residents need and deserve a supermarket of their own. Thomas' Family Market is expected to open next month... and will compliment their current locations in Hazleton.... Dallas... Tunkhannock... Shaverton... and Kingson.
A 19 – year old man has filed suit in federal court against Luzerne County Children and Youth Services. He is only identified as “T-A-P... “ but he alleges that he was in and out of foster homes between 2004 and 2008... allegedly enduring physical attacks... extensive physical labor... and only getting two meals a day. The experience... he says... left him with physical limitations. No comment from the county agency on the allegations.
West Nile / Schuylkill
The state Department of Environmental Protection says mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus in Schuylkill Haven and West Mahanoy Township. Mosquitoes in several other areas in Schuylkill County have also tested positive. Thus far... according to the DEP's website... no humans have contracted the disease in that particular area.
A $5,000 reward is being offered by the family of 19 – year old Rebecca McCallick in hopes of finding the driver of a pick up truck who ran the young woman down two weeks ago. The incident taking place on Hazle Street in Wilkes – Barre. All police have to go on is grainy footage from a security camera. Anyone with information should call Wilkes – Barre Police.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball team have released their schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 season. The BU men's first game is November 15th when the Huskies travel to Penn State Hazleton. Their home opener is on November 20th as Chestnut Hill makes the trip to the Nelson Field House. Meantime the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team begins play November 17th against Lincoln University. The women's home opener is November 20th at 5:30 taking on Chestnut Hill.
Cole Hamels went the distance for the first time in almost a year and Ryan Howard contributed a two-run homer in a three-run first inning. All that as the Philadelphia Phillies claimed a 3-0 victory over Atlanta Braves Tuesday night in the middle contest of a three-game series. Hamels gave up five hits, fanned six and did not issue a walk to gain his first win in four starts. Both teams meet again Wednesday night to wrap up the series.
