It appears Bloomsburg will not be getting the floodwall sought to protect the west end of the town. Mayor Dan Knorr says a letter from the Army Corps of Engineers... says the feds will not be contributing millions of dollars to the proposed project. The floodwall would have protected homes and major businesses which lie in the flood plain... area's which have been devastated by flooding waters of the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek.
Two firms in the recycling business are joining forces aimed at recycling plastic sheeting used on the pads of Marcellus Shale drilling sites. Ultra – Poly Corporation of Berwick and Wellspring Environmental Services of Bloomsburg will take the plastic sheets... turning them into pellets to be used for other products. The company has set up shop in the BIDA Complex at Third and Oak Streets in Berwick.
Red Rock Crash
The investigation continues into a crash... which occurred Tuesday night... just inside the Luzerne County line on Route 487 near Red Rock. One person died in the two – car crash. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16... says a car... southbound on 487... drifted across the center line and collided head on into a car in the northbound lane. One person died upon impact... three other people were injured... with at least one person life - flighted from the scene.
Between now and August 16th... and estimated 330 municipalities across the state... including the Town of Bloomsburg... will be cracking down on aggressive driving... as well as jaywalking. Bloomsburg PD Sgt. Roger Van Loan says the extra funding will allow for extra patrols to spot the problem which has become epidemic. That grant money comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration... to PennDOT... and filters down to local municipalities.
Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will be held in Bloomsburg next month. It's a pretty simple concept.... walking for 24 hours raising money for cancer research. A year ago... 20 teams took place in the Bloomsburg Relay... and raised an estimated $40,000 for cancer research. Want to take part... give the American Cancer Society a call at 570 – 326 – 4149.
One of the highlights of the of the 85th annual Orangeville Community Fire Company Carnival was Tuesday night's Pet and Toy parade. The line of march went north on Main Street was led by the borough's police car... followed by the Catawissa Military Band. Dozens of kids made up the annual parade which ended at the carnival grounds on Mill Street. There were the usual animals... plus antique farm tractors... as well as emergency vehicles such as ambulances... rescue trucks and fire apparatus. The carnival continues through Saturday night with Wednesday night's free entertainment the McNett Country Band.
Fatal Hit and Run
Wilkes – Barre police continue to search for the vehicle who struck and killed a 19 – year old woman around 2:30 Tuesday morning. Rebecca McCallick was struck in the 100 block of Hazle Street by... what is believed to be... a black pick up truck with a loud exhaust. She died a short time later at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital. Authorities are now urging the driver to surrender to police.
We now know that a fight over the weekend at the Laural Mall near Hazleton started with two people jumping in line. Police say 19 - year old Christopher Vega and 21 – year old Joel Fernandez... both of Hazleton... were allegedly stabbed by 19 – year old Carlos Mejia. The trio was in line outside the mall early Saturday morning to purchase sneakers. Authorities say Vega and Fernandez will be okay... and Mejia faces a preliminary hearing next week. He's locked up in the Luzerne County Prison on $100,000 bail.
