Fire apparatus from around the area spent a couple of hour at a pre – dawn blaze Wednesday morning in Catawissa. They were called out around 5:30 to extinguish a garage fire which spread to a home in the 500 block of Pine Street. First responders found flames shooting from the building. There is no word as to what caused this morning's fire near the corner of Church and Pine Streets in Catawissa.
A Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is being called in to investigate.
Blbg Fire Call
A fire call in Bloomsburg last night... but it was somewhat unusual. Firemen were called around 9:45 to squelch a reported fire in landscaping mulch in front of the Geisinger - Bloomsburg Hospital's Medical Arts Building. One piece of apparatus responded to put out the smoldering mess. No idea how or why the fire started.
It appears if things go according to plan... we may see a third expansion at the Geisinger Health System building along Route 42 in Buckhorn. On Tuesday.. a new 37,000 square foot expansion to the Geisinger – Buckhorn office building was officially opened. Now... the health system is considering the purchase of another 40 acres at the site for even more office space. GHS President and CEO Dr. Glenn Steele says for every doctor they hire.... there are four other people working in offices backing up that doctor.
The Hemlock Township side of the Double Track Bridge off West Main Street in Bloomsburg is nothing more than a memory. A crew from Glen Hawebaker contractors taking a week or so to demolish the span. Many who live in the area believe that the demolition of the bridge will relieve flooding at times of high water.
You might have noticed a lower flow on the Susquehanna River in some areas.... including Bloomsburg and Danville. The summer's heat wave... combined with the lack of rain... has drawn down the Susquehanna River in a lot of areas... especially in Bloomsburg where the river is measuring only 1.3 feet.
An 87 – year old Unityville woman has died from injuries sustained over the weekend in Jordan Township... in Lycoming County. Authorities say Stella Kessler died a day after the Sunday afternoon crash. Kessler was a passenger in a car driven by 78 – year old Hazle Steinruck. She was rushed to Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Remember that crash involving Hazleton's top cop a couple of months ago. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16 says they've learned police chief Frank DeAndrea may have run a red light at Broad and Laurel Streets... colliding with an 80 – year old motorcycle rider. Walter Bloss was critically injured when DeAndrea's city – issued vehicle hit him. It's now up to the state police and the state attorney general's office to figure out if DeAndrea will be ticketed in the case.
Hazleton Special Events
Special events in Hazleton may be a thing of the past if City Council has its way. There is a proposed ordinance being considered calling for permits for parades and public events... as well as re-reimbursing the city for services provided by police, fire and the public works departments. That... according to several non – profit groups... would kill events such as the Funfest celebration that brings thousands of people to downtown Hazleton. A final vote on the issue is scheduled for later this month... or early September.
Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis has launched a probe into an estimated 18,000 gallons of missing gas. It's fuel not accounted for being pumped at the Wilkes – Barre Department of Public Work's headquarters fuel station on north Pennsylvania Avenue. The DA is being joined by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. The gas not accounted for was pumped between December of 2011 and June of 2012. Many believe the missing gas is due to poor records keeping.
A triple murder earlier this month have residents of Plymouth... in Luzerne County... fighting mad. A group known as the Plymouth Housing Committee meeting with City Council last night to talk about a proposed “rental limit ordinance.” Under the measure... it would require property owners to register tenants... establish maximum occupancy and would fine landlords if they don't comply. Council is expected to vote on the ordinance August 14th.
Curley / Schultz
A judge has set August 16th to hear oral arguments on pretrial motions in the case of two former Penn State officials charged with perjury and failing to report suspected child sexual abuse. At that time former university athletic director Timothy Curley and former university vice president Gary Schultz will be in a Dauphin County courtroom. Curley and Schultz are awaiting trial on charges they lied to a grand jury investigating former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, and didn't properly report suspected child abuse.
Gov. Tom Corbett has signed legislation that protects bystanders who give emergency aid and businesses that house automated external defibrillators, portable devices that check heart rhythm and could send an electric shock to the heart to treat sudden cardiac arrest. Sen. Lisa Baker of neighboring Luzerne County sponsored the bill. She says it it ensures that someone who acts in good faith is not sued unjustly for "caring enough to get involved."
If you're headed to the annual River Festival in Sunbury next month... don't even think about having an adult beverage. The festival won't be selling beer... since organizers want to keep the theme aimed at families.
Philadelphia's Roy Halladay is back in the Phillies starting rotation after spending the last seven weeks on the disabled list. He hasn't lost his touch as the Phil's downed the Los Angeles Dodgers last night 3 to 2. To put icing on the cake... Hunter Pence slammed a two run hit in the eighth inning. The Phil's and Dodgers meet Wednesday afternoon in a get-a-way game. Practice begins next month for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team... despite controversy surrounding the Sandusky sex scandal. Linebacker Michael Mauti feels his teammates have embraced new head coach Bill O'Brien. The first game of the season is at Beaver Stadium at University Park on September 1st when Penn State takes on Ohio in a 12 noon kickoff.
