Sandusky Report

A new, explosive report is out Thursday... dealing with the Sandusky sex scandal at Penn State University authored by former FBI Director Louis Freeh... and paid for by the school. In it... he says PSU leaders showed... what he described... as total disregard to Sandusky's victims... at least ten boys who he had sex with over a 15 – year period of time. Freeh's report also said that Penn State officials... including football coach Joe Paterno... and others... repeatedly concealed facts about Sandusky's ways with kids. Sandusky was found guilty last month on 45 – counts of child molestation... and is in the Centre County jail awaiting sentencing.

 

Geisinger / Bloomsburg

A new future for the Bloomsburg Hospital... and its health system... now that the merger between Geisinger and Bloomsburg is a reality. During ceremonies Wednesday on the Geisinger – Bloomsburg campus... GHS CEO Dr. Glenn Steele says the merger goes beyond preserving 900 jobs. It's also preserving a way of life. And Steele says more jobs will be added in the future. Now comes the hard part... integrating two hospital cultures... as well as working on information technology projects to bring the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital campus up to date.

 

Summer Concert Series

The summer concert series at the Bloomsburg Town Park continued Wednesday evening. Entertainment was provided by Country Memories... a band which features classic country with a little gospel tossed in for good measure. The crowd brought their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the 90 minute concert.  But the final event of the season is scheduled for August 9th. That's the night of the 55th annual Ice Cream and Cake Festival. Park Association President Chuck Wagner says the association is looking for cake bakers to make the festival a huge success.

 

Art Space Show

There will be a new show opening up at the Art Space Gallery in the 2 – hundred block of Center Street Thursday. Abigail Kurecian of Orangeville to present “Not Far from the Tree.” During an appearance on the WHLM Morning Buzz this week with Joe and Norm... Ms. Kurecian says the show includes her parents. You can check out Ms. Kurciean's work at the Art Space Gallery at 221 Center Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Karen Boback

State Representative Karen Boback will be holding satellite office hours in Benton Thursday. Boback represents Benton and Benton Township in Columbia County. Luzerne and Wyoming Counties are also in her district. In a news release... Ms. Boback says members of her staff will be available Wednesday starting at 9 O'clock... at the Northern Columbia Community and Cultural Center on Community Drive in Benton. There... staffers will attempt to take care of problems constituents are having with state government... as well as to cut red tape for having a difficult time with state agencies.

 

Fire Chief Hurt

Jim Thorpe's Fire Chief is recovering from injuries received when he was hit by a delivery truck last weekend. Chief Bill Diehm was struck by the truck driven by a Lehighton man while directing traffic for a foot race. Police say the driver of the delivery truck may have been texting at the time of the accident... something investigators are checking into. Charges could be filed as early as next week.

 

Berwick Traffic

Another portion of the final phase of the paving of Front and Second Streets in Berwick begins late Friday night. PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason says that starting Friday night at 10... Barletta Construction will preform paving work on Route 11 southbound... between Iron and LaSalle Streets. That means Route 93 at Front Street... and the northbound entrance to LaSalle Street will be closed.

However, there will be a single lane of traffic... southbound on Route 11... with traffic controlled by flaggers. The project will be wrapped up by late Sunday evening.

 

Shikellamy Grant

The Shikellamy School District in Northumberland County is one of 61 organizations getting nearly $20 – million as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Challenge Grant. State Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis said Shikellamy will receive $399,000. Tomalis went on to say that the grant is to fund community learning centers.. for high poverty... and low performing schools.

 

Obama Care Vote

U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta of Hazleton carried through a promise he made to constituents. He voted for the 33rd time to repeal, defund, and dismantle the government takeover of health care Wednesday afternoon. The overall house vote was 244 to 185. Obama Care... as it is known... was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court a week ago. The repeal has no chance of passage in the democratic senate.

 

Rest Area Repairs

Repairs are underway in order to reopen the eastbound Interstate 80 rest area in Columbia County. PennDot's Rick Mason says a water problem and the inability to find the correct parts forced the agency to shut down the comfort station... just east of Mifflinville. It's hoped that the facility will be open late Thursday afternoon.

 

No Smoking

State officials are planning a trial smoking ban next year in two Pennsylvania state parks as they deal with complaints about litter. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says it's getting complaints about cigarette butts discarded in lakes and on beaches. Officials haven't decided which of the state's 120 parks would be part of the trial ban but at least one would have a body of water.

 

Plymouth Cops

An estimated 100 Plymouth residents crowded into a City Council meeting this week... asking for more police protection. It comes days after three people were shot and killed in a drug deal that went south.  Council members shouting back that just hiring one extra officer...will produce a $400 property tax increase. Right now... Plymouth has four full time police officers... and some part – timers.... but, not enough to cover the jurisdiction.

 

Zerbe Twp. Money

Zerbe Township,,, in Northumberland County... will be getting some help to repair damage done by the Flood of 2011. Township supervisors announcing at their meeting they're in line to receive $472,000 in disaster relief funds earmarked for the township. It will pay for repairs and overtime needed by employees to fix up the area.

High school football players from 12 area schools will be competing in a 7 on 7 passing tournament this Saturday at Central Columbia on Old Berwick Road. The tournament begins at 9 and ends at 1 0'clock.

 

Phillies

After the All – Star break... the Philadelphia Phillies are back on the road. They'll begin a weekend series... starting Friday... with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Stadium in Denver. The Phil's enter the contest dead last in the National League East... 14 games behind first place Washington. You can hear that Phillies / Rockies match up starting with the pre – game show at 8:05... with the first pitch to be tossed at 8:40... on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

Brees Vs Saints

Quarterback Drew Brees and the NFL New Orleans Saints still must close a significant gap in guaranteed money if they are to agree on a five-year contract worth about $100 – million. The deadline is Monday for the long-term deal. One source says the sides were more than $10 - million apart in the guaranteed portion of the contract.
