Fair Tickets

With the 157th Bloomsburg Fair on the horizon.... tickets for the night shows are selling as fast as hot sausage on the midway. Grandstand Superintendent Carey Howell says sales transactions have taken place place only at the fair's box office... as well as over the internet... since their ad campaign is just hitting other media outlets. The acts selling the most tickets.... country entertainer Alan Jackson... ventriloquist Jeff Dunham... and fast rising country star Brantley Gilbert. The Bloomsburg Fair begins September 22nd.


PSU Report

The independent investigation led by former FBI chief Louis Freeh into the behind-the-scenes happenings.... and Penn State University's response to the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal is due to be released Thursday. Freeh's wide-reaching search included documents... digital intelligence and direct questioning of Penn State employees... past and present. Freeh was hired by Penn State last November to get the back story into the Sandusky scandal.


Rails to Trails

She's 13 – years old... a Girl Scout... and wants to make a difference in the Columbia County rails to trails program. Kayti Golumb walks the trail adjacent to Millville Road on a regular basis... and she noticed a lot of trash and dog waste... so she did something about it...she iinstall a dog waste station. No word when the additional stations will be in place... but Ms. Golumb will have a fundraiser and trail clean up on August 18th at the Steve Shannon Warehouse.


Lightstreet Parade

A perfect night Tuesday for an annual pet and toy parade in Lightstreet. Hundreds of people lined Main Street... either sitting on the curb or in lawn chairs as a Lightstreet Community fire truck... and the Catawissa Military Band led the line of march. Those units were followed by kids with their pet of choice... some self – propelled cars... followed up by emergency vehicles from across the region.  The parade was held in conjunction with the annual Lightstreet Community Fire Company carnival which runs through Saturday night.


Guilty Plea

A Sherwood Village man... in Scott Township... has been fined 800 – dollars for killing feral cats. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition... 39 – yearr old Eric Moyer of Clifton Drive..admittedd using anti – freeze on chicken to kill the stray cats making their way to his property. Moyer pleading guilty this week to animal cruelty and disorderly conduct.


Hazleton Schools

The Hazleton Area School District plans on going ahead with projects designed to establish a high – tech high school... and renovate the former Bishop Hafey building. The reason... a moratorium for state payments for construction won't begin until October 1st... allowing the district to be paid for the high school in Butler Township... and the Bishop Hafey project. Superintendent Francis Antonelli says the ban on new application projects begins in October... and runs through the end of June next year.


West Hazleton Fire Department

The West Hazleton Fire Department is going to have to wait awhile for a new ladder truck. The West Hazleton Council voting three to two to deny a 10 per cent match sought by the fire department for an $850,000 piece of apparatus. Council members said it couldn't afford the match... since it's trying to get rid of it's distressed status with the state. Instead... council okayed nearly $700 worth of repairs to a fire truck already in the fleet.


Luzerne prothonotary

Luzerne County prothonotary Carolee Medico Olenginski is not happy with county manager Robert Lawton. Lawton pulling a surprise visit recently on Olenginski's office while she was out... and her deputy on vacation. In an e-mail to Lawton and county council members... Olenginski said she didn't appreciate negative comments coming from the county manager. Thus far... Lawton has remained silent.


Scranton Pay Scale

The attorney for three unions in Scranton.... including firefighters and police, said he expects to file several legal actions, including a motion to hold Mayor Chris Doherty in contempt of court for violating a judge's order to pay full wages. Last week, Doherty cut the pay for about 400 employees to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The Electric City is an estimated $16 – million in the hole.

MLB All Star

The National League big bats had their act together in Tuesday night's Major League Baseball's All – Star game in Kansas City. The NL struck for five runs against American League ace Justin Verlander in the first inning and cruised to an 8-0 victory at Kauffman Stadium. Giants center fielder Melky Cabrera earned the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award after bashing a two-run homer in the fourth inning to go along with a single and run scored in the NL's big first frame. All major league action resumes by Friday.


Eastern All – Stars

For the second consecutive year the Eastern League All-Star Game will be contested inside the borders of Pennsylvania. The game to be played Wednesday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. The players come from minor league teams in Harrisburg... Reading Altoona and Erie. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
