Bloomsburg Police Hire
A veteran police officer now working part - time in the Kulpmont and Danville departments will soon be joining the Bloomsburg Police Department. On a vote of 6 to 1 the Town Council Monday night voted to hire David Bowman to be the 15th officer on the force. Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says the new hire is an important addition to his roster. The only council person to vote against the hire was Fred Trump. He believes the hiring of Bowman will place stress on the current town budget.
Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania continue to tumble. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday morning shows that self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.26 - a gallon... the same as it was Monday... and is down 28 – cents a gallon from a month ago. Gas prices are expected to continue the downward trend since the cost of a barrel of crude is coming down as well.
Barletta / Supreme Court Ruling
Congressman Lou Barletta says he's happy the U-S Supreme Court has upheld the cornerstone of Arizona's anti – illegal immigration law. The high court ruled Monday that Arizona police officers can check the immigration status if they believe that a person is in this country illegally. Barletta says law enforcement officers in Arizona can help the federal government enforce immigration laws. If you recall.. Barletta instituted the first local ordinance cracking down on illegal immigration when he was mayor of Hazleton.
It's part of Little League baseball few of us know about... it's called Challenger Baseball... for kids 5 through 18 with mental or physical disabilities. Director Greg Molter says the program has grown in popularity... now with 52 players. Challenger Baseball is holding a fundraiser Saturday with a pig roast and an auction at the Southside Fire Company in Riverside on Avenue B.
Montour Road Project
A resurfacing project along a 1.1 stretch of route 254 in Derry Township... in Montour County is now underway. The work will take place from Steffens Road... east of Washingtonville... to the intersection with Cromley Road. New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company will preform roadway and shoulder resurfacing... pavement markings... and center and edge line rumble strips. The $241,000 contract should be wrapped up by the end of July.
As Jerry Sandusky sits in the Centre County Jail... he insisted through a lawyer Monday that he is not guilty of sexually abusing children. Graphic testimony was given last week during his trial in Bellefonte over the past two weeks by several of his victims... saying they were molested in the showers at Penn State and in the basement of his home. That was enough for jurors to find Sandusky guilty over the weekend of 45 of 48 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 – years.
With Jerry Sandusky now convicted.... his defense team's attention turn to a possible appeal. Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola says there are plenty of reasons to get the conviction overturned. Sandusky remains in the Centre County Correctional facility in Bellefonte... where he is segregated from other prisoners... and has been placed on a suicide watch. Sentencing to take place by the end of August.
A 40 – year old Wilkes – Barre man is jail after he allegedly robbed a Nanticoke pharmacy at midday Monday. Police say Mark Benjamin strolled into Spotanski's Pharmacy... pulled a weapon on employees... demanding pain medication. About an hour following the robbery... Benjamin was picked up along South Main Street in Hanover Township. He was arraigned and is now in the Luzerne County Jail on $100,000 bond.
If you want to set off fireworks in the City of Hazleton this 4th of July... you'll need a permit. And the Hazleton Police Department plans to look for folks who break the city's ordinance if illegal fireworks are spotted. However, if you have devices that that are used close to the ground... a permit isn't needed. Thus far permits have been granted to the Hazleton Recreation Department and a business that plans to hold a display.
An investigation is underway into the robbery of a jewelry store owner late Sunday night. The heist took place at A-1 Gold and Diamonds on Route 315 in Plains Township. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16... is reporting the owner was headed for his car when a man in a plastic mask flashed a gun... making off with bags of coins and gold. The bandit left the area in a gray Ford Mustang.
Since he has not been the head football coach at Berwick since the 2005 season, George Curry doesn't know the players he's working with right now and they don't know him. Curry telling our Jim Doyle that the kids have responded well to his leadership. With 413 career wins, Curry is the winningest coach in the history of Pennsylvania high school football. His Bulldogs open the 2012 season, Friday night, August 31st, at Crestwood.
The Philadelphia Phillies began a four game series with cross – state rival Pittsburgh Monday night. In the end the Phil's defeated the Pirates 8 to 3 on Joe Blanton's seven hitter. Both teams meet Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park in South Philly.
